When someone buys my 260 Stalker, the boat's I'm looking at will all probably need repowering. Strongly considering converting a boat to diesel power, since my boat hrs use will justify the long term savings.

Came accross the Marine Diesel http://www.marinedieselusa.com

Spoke with their installer and sales rep. They state the are direct replacements for the 454 engine. No hull/stringer modifications and the install takes about 3 days (one day to pull/one day to prep/ one day to install and water test). A Yanmar installer quoted me 6 weeks time to get a boat repowered/converted.

They kind of lost me on the techincal issues about torque/low end power etc etc, but long story short. Seems like something to consider.

Anyone have information that they can put in laymen's terms so I can help explain to my wife what I am considering.

Out of curiosity, what was the approximate cost of putting that HumVee engine in a boat?

Could not get a true quote from any installer. No one I spoke to will give me a quote w/o seeing the boat. Most of them come right out an state- "It will not be cheap" and they do not want to "low ball" you and then find out that it's alot more. Props and shafts have to be considered. Tim @ engines1 has also been great about giving me info, but the Volvo diesel he recommends is way out of my price range.

The manufacture for the Marine Diesel listed an MSRP of around $22k for the engine and transmission. The installer stated that the engines should bolt up to the transmission on a 454, so you could knock off a few grand. After some proding, I got a ballpark figure of $18k (plus shipping and install) for the Marine Diesel. About the same price as the Yanmar 240.

The major saving in the project is the install cost. The Yanmar installers were telling me to budget 60 hrs or so for the job v. about 20 for the marine install. You also keep from a lot of hidden problems since the wiring harnesses connect right up.

Trying to track down info on parts replacment/costs/availability. I know the Yanmar parts can be expensive. Trying to put together a true list of operating costs for any engine I need to throw into a boat (gas or diesel).

MC,

I actually did the exact thing you are talking about with my 246. I'm not a gearhead but i did the engine swap myself. It took my about 60 hours and I used the yanmar 190. This is the same block as the 240 with different fuel delivery. I was extremely pleased with the results and would recommend it highly if the $$ are not a problem for you. I can only speak about the yanmar but it worked perfect in my installation. It was not without a lot of work but worth it. The useful service life on the Yanmar 4LHA series is many thousands of hours unlike some of the others. The 4LHA is not a high performance motor which means it should live a very long time. Feel free to call me if you like. Rick 813-267-6846

Hey Kurt,
Doesn't Guest look like john3316 to you? Can't we check his IP address? I thought Gavin set the forum for posting by members only... or is my memory failing again?

I can deal with him too. More than once I've asked him to stop posting those type of links.

As far as I'm concerned, next time he's gone for good.

If anyone sees another post like that, just PM me and direct me to it. That will be it from that IP address.
