Due to lack of range, and fuel costs I'm going to put a deisel in my boat. Does anybody have any opinions on Yanmar and Volvo? What are the modifications involved converting from gas to deisel?
Thanks,
Rick

Yanmar all the way.
Involved:
1.Engine Mounts
2.Exhaust adjustments
3.Adding fuel return to tank. if you have a new tank, that didn' come from the factory, there is a good chance there already is a port for fuel return and all you need is fittings. if tank is in good shape and rather new, it is possible to weld in the new fitting. If the tank is anywhere near ten years old, now is a good time to go ahead and order replacement tanks with returns and pickups already welded in place. Last tank I ordered was built in New Jersey and itt came with an epoxy coating.
4. New Fuel lines/filters, adding return line manifold to make sure the return goes back to the appropriate tank
5. New wiring harness,guages
There is probably a few more things that I have missed off of the top of my head, but that is the jist of it.

Yanmar seems to have a more diverse network of servicing dealers & Volvo parts, when needed, are pricey. My vote would be Yanmar.

Yanmar. A shaft change may have to happen as well. Not necessarily larger, if you stay w/ a 200 Yanmar, but about 4.5 in. longer. You'll probably want to use the ZF gear w/ 1.22 to 1. Your new prop should be a 15X17 RH 3 blade. Raw intake will increase from 1 1/4 to 1 1/2, but you should be fine w/ adapting. Fuel returns, engine mounts, and a new Tach, and oil press. gauge, and you're there.

Don't forget to consider the weight difference between the Yanmar and Volvo. I believe the Yanmar 4 cylinder (190 and 240 Hp) engines weight around 850 with gear. The Volvo D4 weights much more, somewhere in the 1300 - 1400 lb range. The Yanmar will not change the weight of your boat too much. I'd have to see the exhaust below the waterline if the waterlive drops 2 inches.

Rick,
Without question a yanmar 170/190/240. They are all the same cubic inches just different fuel delivery. I did this exact conversion with my 246WA at 400 hours. It doubled my fuel economy and range. I have talked about it many times on this site, but it usually "puts off" the gas guys. If you want to talk about it please feel free to call me.

Rick - I am interested in your thoughts about diesel repowering. Though not right for this "Gas guy", its still real interesting stuff and I encourage you to post up rather than do via PM.
Either here or on the Diesel Dudes board would work.

Thanks Lep. I really appreciate that. I will get my notes together and try and post up some useful information.

I've heard that the guy's at the Shamrock plant in Fl. are going to be testing fuel burn performance on a 315 Yanmar in a 270 Mac. and a 240 in a 246 Open this Fri. With the test guy's from Mastery engine's. If I can get the results I'll make a post for everyone :D :D

That engine for 12 g's is cheap enough, but I can't find it in the Yanmar book, and doesn't bobtail mean no gear? I'll bet once you do all the leg work, it isn't such a good deal after all.

This thread belongs in Diesel Dudes. How about one of those conversion kits for a Dodge Cummins( can be bought at a salvage yard)fairley reasonably.

Shamrocket,
When and where did you do the repower. I am in H.B. and just starting to look for a Yanmar. I have a 220 open.
Thanks

It has been about 2 years now. I took it to Toni Athens at Seaboard Marine in Oxnard. He does excellent work. You can find him through his own website, or through boatdiesel.com. I am trying to sell my boat right now, so that I can move up to a larger sportfisher. Let me know if you are interested.

the cummins 4 cyl 250 hp will also fit in the 22' boats. a lot more bullet proof engine and parts are a whole lot cheaper then Yanmar or volvo
The Watcher: I'm very interested in finding out the results of the test. Please if you find out the results I would apperciated if you post it.

The Cummins 4BT250 is a good engine, especially now they solved the injector problems they were having a few years ago. This engine creates a lot of vibrations at idle speed due o the 4 cylinder configuration and long stroke. Not as sociable as the 6 cylinder engines but it is a Cummins and that is good.

I am in the process of repowering right now!!!! We have a 1981 shamrock pilothouse 26' w/perkins 6-354 motor. After having problems with last motor we decided to repower with a 240 yanmar(after alot of research!!!!!). The motor is 1000lbs lighter than the perkins to start with, 4cyl instead of 6cyl. Although you could put a 315 yanmar in by changing out the water pickup to 2", change your shaft to 1 1/2", change the cutlass bearing. and the prop. Everything else is easy!!! The wiring harness made wiring a breeze. And the control panel is a great option for all of the instruments. We put a new four blade 17x16(cliped to almost 15) on. The whole boat was a ground up resto. The boat looks great!!! I a month I will be finished and will post some pics. Yanmar 240 3.5gph you can't beat that!!!!!!
