--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have noticed a lot of questions about different diesels lately and thought I might chime in and try to answer some of the questions in a fairly general way. This year we are offfering the Yanmar diesels from the factory as the standard diesel option. We will also be offering Cummins diesels on a limited basis. I have seen questions about price, durability and general performance and thought that you might be interested to hear what we are finding at the factory.

First, Yanmars are a very simple, bulletproof mechanical diesel. They run fairly high in the rpm ranges and are a very good recreational diesel that we have had very little problems with.

Second, Cummins has two different lines of diesels right now. The regular line of diesels is a waste gated, electric diesel that has been made to meet the higher emissions requirements that will come into effect next year for all recreational diesel motors. They are quieter than a mechanical diesel, are essentially smoke free after start up and a little more efficient. They are more expensive however because of the electronic controls and waste gate exhaust. The waste gate exhaust is what eliminates what is sometimes referred to as "turbo lag" on initial run up. 2.Cummins also has a fully electronic, waste gated and common rail diesel QSB line of motors which are very quiet, smooth and can be coupled with the smartcraft guages for complete fuel and engine management. We are not sure however if we will be able to offer the QSB engines on our boats because they are a very low rpm motor and thus need to throw a large wheel to achieve desired performance. With our small boats we are not sure how large of a wheel we can run with out the keel drive or the hull bottom interfering. Stay tuned and I will update as to progress. They are very expensive however, they will be about $5-6 thousand more than a comparable regular electric cummins diesel. The regular cummins diesel is about 2-4 thousand more than a comparable yanmar diesel right now. So there is considerable expense in going with an electric diesel.

Third, Volvo, they only manufacture a full common rail, fully electric waste gated diesel. Somewhat comparable to the QSB series cummins. Without the fully digital smartcraft engine management system. They do seem to run higher rpms and can throw a little smaller wheel than the QSB. They are a little less money than the QSB but very high tech common rail technology.

We do not have any plans from the factory to provide Volvos engines as an option and plan to primarily provide Yanmars with some Cummins mixed in. That said Volvo has had some issues here and there, but I believe that they are just a little ahead of the curve. Yanmar will have to be fully electric and perhaps common rail by next year and whenever a major change like that happens there is potential to have some bumps in the road. I am planning on talking to Yanmar to find out exactly what their plans are to meet the new requirements. So I will keep you posted
on what develops with regards to Yanmar and there plans should you have interest in being updated.

I hope that this information might be useful to anyone considering a new diesel purchase or repower. The new electric and commonrail diesels are very nice, but they are more money, so the benefits have to be weighed

Thanks Palmer. Evaluating a repower for a 26' Mack. You covered many of my questions including the rpm range versus wheel size capability. Nice of the manufacturer to provide after the sale advise.

Looking forward to your update.

That turboed 6 cyl. Cummings Palmer mentioned planes my buddies 32 ft. 12K# Farallon in 3-5 seconds! That is one sweet motor. But as palmer indicated the prop is somewhat larger, 19" if I am not mistaken.

Palmer, if you wanted to go to a 28 footer you may be able to do it. I vote for a 28" WA.

There was a recent thread about these motors on THT, or was it Boatered.com? One or the other. Anyway, the gist of it was that they are well received in Europe - a guy from Sweden posted back - but around these parts - where will you go for parts?

Interesting concept they have there, sorta like the old Ford flathead V8.
