I am thinking of replacing the mechanical pump with a electric one . I think it will make refilling the filters & bleeding the primary side easier than that lever on the pump. Are there any downsides to this?

Skip-

I have seen both used together when the lift pump on the engine has a long "pull".

The Walbro electric style comes in 12 and 24 volt versions. It is the same one Tony Athens uses on his set ups (see boatdiesel.com).

These Walbro pumps have a magnetic strainer inside that can't be accessed. Eventually they seem to fail over time. Similar pumps are availible from other manufactures, maybe they will last longer. You will also have to plumb a return line for the pump with check valves, etc.

I would think a small 12V portable jabsco pump would work nicely for any filter changes like this, and you could use it for lube oil changes as well.

I have a larger portable gear pump that I use for everything like this on my gas engine that always seems to come-in handy.

In my boat I have a Yanmar and when I use my "boat's tank" I have the engines manual pump and it takes forever to refill the filters. I added a 2 tank in one of the front compartments and I use a Thermo King electric diesel pump. Its a 10psi pump. I just turn the Y valves, put on the pump's switch, wait 5 seconds and start the angine. This has saved me a couple of times out there when I've had to change filters out there. I can get a pic. of my setup next week.
Here is a pic of the pump:

I've never been much for electric pumps mounted at/near the motor. electric pumps are far better pushers than suckers as a general rule. This is a more automotive related opinion, but should carryover to boats.

The weakest link in Dodge trucks with Cummins is the electric lift pump.

Mickey I'd like to see that setup.
