Did you see the 175lb. tarpon caught by a 16 year old in SWS this month? That was a BIG fish...11lbs. over the NC state record!
We fished inshore of Oregon Inlet one day this summer and another boat we were with hooked up with (and subsequently lost) a nice tarpon. I didn't realize they were even this far north until this summer.

I didn't realize they were even this far north until this summer.
I witnessed a 128 pound tarpon being landed on the old and now burned Paradise Pier on North Topsail Beach, in North Carolina. Took the guy a long time to get him, and I believe he would rather have caught a king mackerel. It would have been a lot less work to catch a 30# king.
Speaking of which, I put out a fire on that same pier. Everybody just stood around looking at me, while I pulled one of the planks and splashed water on the joists, where a cigarette had fallen and started the fire. Flames were leaping all over the place, and nobody raised a finger.
The fish weren't even biting, at the moment. Looks like I could have gotten a hand. The guy at the bait and ticket counter only handed me a small wrecking bar... he was busy making money. Kind of a surreal situation, but at least I got the fire out, that time. It's gone, now.
I think I'd rather catch the grouper. At least you can eat them, if the PETA folks ain't watchin', and the fish eating mood strikes.

The record tarpon came off a pier on 20 lb test to boot! There are some good threads about it on ncwaterman.com.

Right in Fort Lauderdale. Down Town in the New River. Just drag some live mullets past the Multi-Million dollar homes and pop them. All winter long. I hooked into a couple last year have not had a chance to get out yet this year which explains why my boat is for sale.
