Shamrock Boat Owners Club
2006 Southern California Fish Fest III
Fishing Tournament
Welcome to this year’s FF III fishing tournament!
The event will start at 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening, August 18th, with a “Kick-Off” bash/dinner at the Firefly Restaurant (outside patio) where registration will take place. Upon registering for the event, boaters will be allowed to depart anytime thereafter (those who want to cruise out Friday night) with everybody due back in on Saturday, August 19th, at 6:00 p.m. for weigh-in time.
Boat Category
This will be based on a point system (see “Tournament Rules” below). The boats accumulating the most points will be awarded cash and prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. If any of the boats are tied for the most points, the heaviest 3 fish will determine a tie break. Each boat will be required to pay a $100 entry fee for this event, which will go into the jackpot for this category with a 50-30-20 percent split for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively.
Individual Category
This category will be optional with one individual catching the heaviest fish being awarded cash and prizes. Anybody who desires to enter this category will be required to pay $25 into this jackpot with the one winner taking it all.
Tournament Rules
1). Yellowtail, Albacore, BFT, YFT, Bigeye Tuna, Dorado, White Seabass, and Halibut: For each of these species, the first fish will be worth 5 points and each additional fish will be worth 1 point; up to a maximum of 5 fish for each species per boat (i.e. 9 points maximum for each of these species).
2). All other species will be worth one point up to a maximum of 5 fish for each species per boat (i.e. 5 points maximum for each species).
3). Only finned fish will count towards the tournament (i.e. no sharks, skates, rays, marlin, swordfish, eels, squid, lizard fish, etc.).
4). Excluded fish include "bait fish" (i.e. anchovies, sardines, mackerel, etc.), Skipjack, Bonito, Barracuda, Mackerel, and Sanddabs.
5). Only fish caught by line fishing with rod and reel will count towards the tournament.
6). All fishing regulations for California and Mexican waters will be applicable to the tournament. Any violation will be grounds for disqualification for the entire boat crew.
ENJOY!!

HOTEL INFORMATION:
The event will be held at "The Dana on Mission Bay" (Map and Directions (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?latlongtype=internal&addtohistory=&latitude=fHHXtAs1LxE%3d&longitude=wgl2df2%2bCJ6xXXI%2fTpITvQ%3d%3d&name=Dana%20Inn%20%26%20Marina&countryid=250&country=US&address=1710%20W%20Mission%20Bay%20Dr&city=San%20Diego&state=CA&zipcode=92109&phone=619%2d222%2d6440&cat=dana%20inn&spurl=0&searchtype=GenSearch)). The address is:
The Dana on Mission Bay
1710 W Mission Bay Dr.
San Diego, CA 92109
(619) 222-6440
Members who have already booked rooms at the Dana have found the best rates by going through "GetAwayToday" with a minimum of 2 nights stay (reserving through the hotel directly is more expensive with a 3 night minimum stay). Here are instructions on booking rooms through www.GetAwayToday.com (http://www.getawaytoday.com):
* In the "Plan Your Vacation Today" box, select San Diego for "Destination".
* Type in date under the "Check in date" box (use the calendar)
* Enter the number of nights under the "# of nights" box (minimum of 2 nights)
* Click on "Get Quotes"
* Under the "Dana on Mission Bay," follow the directions for securing the room
SLIP INFORMATION:
* Guest of the Dana on Mission Bay (hotel and marina): So far, we have secured only 2 slips, which will go to the non-trailered boats (i.e. AJ and Magic Rod). As more boat space becomes available, the members who book a room(s) at the Dana the earliest will have priority (only guest of the Dana hotel will be allowed to dock their boats in the guest slips). The dock master stated that he's confident that there will be more space available as the event date approaces. We're also working with Sundance Marine, a sponsor for the event and the local dealer for Shamrock Boats, for additional space. This will mostly be for members who do not plan to get a room at the Dana hotel. However it works out, we're hoping to have dock space for all boats.

You could disconnect the trailer and park next to it, if there is some sort of restriction on length. I've done this before with no complaints from management at other locations.
SWEET!
Made my reservation today. Looking forward to "Festing" it up again this year.
Hey, do we get any points for catching and releasing marlin? How about an opah? Did you see that guy caught an 81# opah off LaJolla Canyon this week? Unbelievable. Anyone who catches one of those in the Fishfest should automatically win the whole darn tourney. Good luck.....
I think I'm gonna target lizardfish...LOL

So...is this the typical tight lips SoCal tradition or Shammie owners willing to share info?
Ya know..you catch a bunch more fish when info is shared. This ain't Bisby's.
I'd be interested in taking on at least one crewmember that is familiar with the area/techniques. I'll show you mine if you show me yours...LOL

I usually share my latest Intel with anybody who is interested. During last year's event, fishing was very spotty, which is unusual for the month of August. We gambled by going some 40+ miles south into Mexican waters and did just okay while others got into a better bite closer in U.S. waters. Kelp paddies were scarce that day and the tunas were nowhere to be found. Overall, very slow day for everybody.
As time gets closer, I'll be posting up the latest fishing reports on a regular basis. Also, we should be able to find a knowledgeable local who would be glad to ride out on your boat.
A little O.T...
Is it a good idea to bring passports along if there is a possiblilty of ending up in Mexican waters?
BTW, we are still trying to get our schedule together. It's very close to the time our daughter will be having her first child (mid-August +/-). We should hopefully be getting things firmed up in the next week or so. At that point, I guess I'll need to find out how to throw our names into the mix since were not bringing a boat (may only be me going out on a boat since my wife doesn't appreciate rough water and might opt out if waether looks shaky to her).

Kurt,
You do not need your passport. You will need to get a Mexican Fishing Permit (around $24 for one week) and/or a California salt water permit ($12 per day of fishing). I usually get all of the names of people coming in from out of town and pick up all the permits in one trip to the local tackle store. The little market at the Dana Marina also have the Mexican and California permits there as well. We will hook you up on on a boat. I think it would be cool to see the expression on your face when you hook up on your first toad Yellowtail or a 40# Albacore. I have plenty of extra gear for you as well.

Kewl. Just remind them I'm an asshole ;-)
Only SoCal fishing I've done is long range. Not much personal need for intel.
I'd like to encourage everyone to share info. This will be a lot more fun if folks get into the fish. Listening to one person talk about the 10# YT isn't what this is about to me. Us travelers will have way more invested than any prize could cover...so we sure ain't doin it for the $'s.
Well mex fishing lic's be available? What's the limit? net or gaff or 'poon?

I received 2 on-line applications yesterday (Thursday, May 25th) and one of them did not come through properly due to some type of technical glitch. I got the one from "Lolo Kane", but the other one was blank.

The fishing is starting to heat up!! Bluefin Tuna went wide open for some of the boats yesterday (10 per rod average) 40 miles out. I heard they were in the 20 - 30 lb. range with some at 65 lbs. I'm sure there were many lost by people using inadequate gear.
Also, the yellow tail are very wide open now, but they are the smaller models. Albacore tuna in the 20# range are being caught as well. I was told that there is a large school of Yellowfin tuna in the 30#-40# range 170 miles out.
So far, this season is shaping up very well. If this trend continues, FF III looks very promising...

Zach
Your 30LB stuff will do fine. Have the following setups:
-15 lb light rod for the bass (they count as points)
-25 lb for all around stuff
-30 lb for the tunas, yellow tails, dorados, etc
-trolling rods (40 - 60 lb)
Make sure you have fresh line on your reels. P-Line seems real common in this area, but you can go with the cheaper Ande line as well. I like clear, blue (P-Line), and pink/red.
Anything else we can add here Jason?
Mistress
06-15-2006, 09:12 PM
terminal tackle, methods???...what "bass"? what "all-around"?
Damon
06-15-2006, 10:16 PM
1. Calico and Sand bass
2. All around fishing near shore and offshore. I mostly use the 25 lb setup for the yellowtail at the kelp paddies, for the tunas after a jig strike, and for the bass near shore. If there are bigger yellow tails and tunas being caught, then I go with the 30 lb set up.
For terminal gear, I use the Mustad live bait hooks. I carry sizes 2, 1, 1/O, 2/O, and 3/O. I bring 1/8 and 1/4 oz split shot weights, 1/4 & 1/2 & 3/4 and 1 oz sliding egg weights, various rubber cored weights, and 3 & 5 oz torpedo weights. For trolling, get two 6" and a couple of 4" natural cedar plugs, one or two 6" black and purple cedar plugs, Zuker zuccini broom tail lure, Zuker black and purple feather, one black and purple and one lighter colored Rapala or Yozuri, mexican flag feather, and an assortment of jet head lures (one darker and one lighter colored). Black and purple colored lures and the cedar plugs do really well around here. You might want to try root bear feathers and pink and white feathers as well.
Jason, add anything I'm missing here.
Mistress
06-16-2006, 02:27 AM
I've got all the trolling gear, feathers, etc....maybe get some bigger live bait hooks. I really like the ringed ones.
Y'all use any swimbaits for either open water or nearshore bass?
Damon
06-16-2006, 10:50 AM
Swim baits work really well here. I've had good results with the black/purple, the black/clear with the little sparkles, and the green/clear with the little sparkles on the tuna. I like using the swim baits for a stinger in a trolling pattern (a middle line set out past all the outer lines).
The bass go nuts on the smaller swim baits. I've had great success on the brown and orange.

Here's an update. As of now, we have received 6 applications and there are 4 others who have indicated that they plan to participate but have not submitted applications. Therefore, we have 10 boaters committed to the event. There is one other boater I still need to contact, which may give us the 11th spot. Last year, we had 9 boaters participate. It looks like we'll have a slightly better turn out than we did last year.
The wind has created sloppy conditions out in the water for the last 5 days. Therefore, the fishing has been hit or miss. One report had some BFT and Albacore being caught around the 425 area (30 NM south of Mission Bay) last Sunday, but most of the fishing is going on at the 295 and 1010 area (65-70 NM SSW of Mission Bay). The SST is looking very promising for the fish to make a good run closer in. Hopefully, we'll see them at the high spots within the 390 area (between 30 and 50 NM out of Mission Bay) soon.

I have a VHF marine radio license for my boat, understand that might be important if you plan to visit any marina in Mexican waters. It's required if you communicate with the mexican port over the air.
Will need the boat licensed and self etc. ?? Is my regular California fishing license enough?

Only if you plan to fish in Mexican waters. Your California salt water permit will only work in U.S. waters, not Mexican waters. Last year during the event, the best fishing was in U.S. waters around the 182 and 181 areas (between 24 and 36 NM out of Mission Bay). So far this year, fishing has been good in both Mexican waters and U.S. waters.
The draw back to fishing in Mexican waters this year has been the heavy activity of the tuna seiners. They have really put a hurt on the recreational tuna fishing. The tunas caught this year have been ranging from 25# to 85#, which is larger than usual.

Mexican boat permits are available at the Dana Landing Market. For boats 23'-29' the one year permit will cost $89 and for boats under 22'11" the cost is $49. You can only get a one year permit for your boat. You will also need a current copy of your boats registration. Weekly, monthly and one year fishing permits are also available at the market. My local tackle shop sells these same permits for $9 less, so you could save a few bucks by getting them on the way down. The Dana Landing Market will have everything you need as far as tackle goes, but their prices are higher than most shops.
I have my permits, but will try to fish U.S. waters just to maximize my time with lines in the water.

Boy, they mark their prices way up! I'll be more than happy to go the Mexican government's "Oficina de Pesca" located in San Diego and get these permits at cost. The fees are as follows:
Fishing license pricing:
One week: $22.90
One month: $32.80
One year: $42.70
Boat permit pricing:
Small (17' - 22' 11"): $32.55
Medium (23' - 29' 11"): $65.10
Large (30'+): $97.65
If you want me to pick up any of these permits for you, send me a PM. I'll pick them up the day prior to the event (i.e. Thursday, August 17th).
Traditionally, the fishing is better in Mexican waters. HOWEVER, the water is getting unusually warm and some Big Eye tuna YFT, and Dorado have already been caught (way early for these). If this trend continues, we'll have Dorado, BET, YT, and tons of YFT on the chew by mid-August in both U.S. and Mexican waters.
You'll have until August 17th to decide if you plan to fish in Mexican waters. I suggest waiting until then to make your decision.

I just wanted to give you guys an update on the fishing. At this point, the Tuna seem to be few and far between, but the Yellowtail and Dorado are being caught in some fairly good numbers on the kelps. Guys are reporting them just about everywhere, including U.S. waters, you just need to find the right kelp. Some of the Dorado are in the 30lb+ range, but mostly in the teens and twenties, with the Yellowtail in the same class. I'll be going out next Friday the 28th and will report back with some first hand info. So far, this year has been way better than last year....... let's hope this keeps up! I'm pretty optimistic, that by the time the Fish Fest rolls around, the Tuna will be ALL OVER THE PLACE! I'm keeping my fingers crossed  .
One more thing, I'd suggest getting some surface poppers for those Dorado that won't eat the bait.

Here are the Yozuri "Hydro Tiger" poppers that Jason has had good success with. He's done well with the "Green Mackerel" and the "Blue Mackerel" colors.
Also, each person who will be on your boat will need a license, regardless if it's in California or Mexican water. California does not required a fishing permit for your boat like Mexico does. California fishing permits for individuals cost around $12 per day. I think the annual permits run around $50 or $60 per calender year.

A quick update here.
We only have 3 slips so far, which will go directly to those who are trailerless (AJ, MagicRod, and Btravis). Keep in mind that some may become available at the last minute, which was the case last year.
Also, I have reserved a dock for 12 boats at the Paradise Point Resort accross the bay from the Dana (about 1/4 of a mile accross the bay) from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday for the weigh-in and fish count, announcement of the winners, and the disbursement of prizes (weigh-in deadline is at 6 P.M.). I will go into more details on Friday during the sign in. This will allow us all to dock in one location instead of doing this in some parking lot.

Fishing Update:
WIDE OPEN Dorodo and Yellowtail!! However, the seiners are still putting a major hurt on the tuna fishing unless you go long (i.e. 50 plus miles). Keep your fingers crossed and hope that the tuna seiners go bye-bye or that the schools sneak past them into U.S. waters (they can only fish in Mexican waters).
Have a look at the fish reports:

Anyone want to share DSC numbers? I have a two DSC radios and have never used this feature. I thought this tournament might be a good time to try them out.

Mike,
I have the dsc set up but I don't know anyone else who uses it.
I was thinking of setting up a chart with grid lines on it. It may be easier to give some grid areas rather than sending out coord on the air waves.
Anyway just a thought

Hi all - just arrived in San Diego after a 10-hour 550 mile tow. I'm so stiff I can hardly walk. MPG about 8 mpg with the boat/trailer and above 17mpg without it. Two and a quarter tankfuls. We are with wifes family vacationing in Coronado so might get a chance to check offshore conditions some time this week.
Couple thoughts -
COMMUNICATION:
As I understand it, using our MMSI (Selective Calling) numbers would probably be a lot of trouble for little gain. Unless your radio ALSO has an encryption board our conversation will still be wide open to any listeners. I don't have encryption anyway.
With group selective calling we just won't hear anybody else. Everybody will hear us. Or am I all wet on this? Also we would all have to program all of the MMSIs in a group on every boat, right? I'd suggest we just pick a watch channel and possibly use the grid Magic Rod suggested.
Also we could have a few code-words planned if we are trying to be stealthy for some reason. "Warfdog - code able charlie zulu at 281" means surface bites dorado trolling at the xxx spot (maybe 182) or something like that... Or maybe that kind of chatter will call in homeland security.
NAVIGATION - FISHING SPOTS
I am going to put the GPS coordinates of all the local fishing spots in my chartplotter, hopefully using my PC.
Raymarine has a piece of software PCWaypoint for the E and C units that runs on your PC and converts an Excel .XLS spreadsheet to their proprietary waypoint format. You then put that on a memory card and import it to your GPS. I can share the memory card with anyone that has a Raymarine unit if this works out. I don't know how other chartplotters do this.
I have last years list of coordinates, but do we have a shortened or updated list of probably waypoints?
LOCAL STORES
I would like to pick up some tackle and licenses. If the local guys have a favorite SD takle store were at? Also same for mexican licenses etc. If anyone wants me to look for something for them I'll be glad to pick it up while I'm there...
Danny and Damon - if I can help you guys out with anything this week please just ask. I'm here and don't mind a few errands or whatever.

Do you plan to go out prior to the Fish Fest event? I'd be more than happy to get together with you ("Mootime Creamery" in Coronado?) and share some information on the spots and the type of fishing we do here. Jason and I went out on Friday and had a BLAST with the Dorado and Yellowtails. Using the linked map, enter the following spots:
http://home.san.rr.com/bix/Spots/B&WSanDiegoAreaFishingSpots.zip (you'll need Winzip)
#3. Mission Bay (Bay entrance for the event)
#6. 9 Mile S.

#28. Mushroom
#29. 60 Mile Bank
#30. Airplane Bank
#31. 220
#32. 295
#33. 238

#47. Rockpile
#53. Todos Santos Islands
#54. 101

#63. 209
#66. 390
Also, somebody can provide us with the LAT/LONG for the "Hidden Bank" and "Upper 500" (these are not on the map).
Obviously, you're not going to hit all of these points. However, these are great reference points when listening to the radio traffic.

All,
I reserved an additional room in anticipation that all the rooms would be booked closer to the event incase if somebody needs one at the last minute. I have until tomorrow evening to cancel it. Does anybody need a room?
I know many of you will be staying in your boats/trucks, but we probably will not have the slips to accommodate everybody. So far, we only have slips to accommodate the 3 trailerless members who will be boating to the event. During my lunch break, I plan to go to the Dana and see if the dock master can scrounge up some more dock space.
With all that said, I would recommend that a group of you book the room I have reserved (all rooms are currently booked at the hotel) to use as a hang out place for relaxing, showering, and crashing out in. For example, if 4 of you decided to do this, it will only cost $60 per night for each person (the rooms are $240 per night). If any of you are interested in doing this, let me know by tomorrow afternoon.
There have been very long lines at the bait receiver off and on. For example, the lines were long on Thursday and Saturday, but not bad on Thursday and Sunday. You never know what days will be bad there. I suggest getting to the bait receiver prior to 5 A.M. to avoid the potentially long lines. Also, it may not be a bad idea to leave an hour earlier to catch some live mackerel for live bait north of the jetties using Sabiki jigs.
During the get together and registration Friday evening, we'll be passing out some grid charts, copies of the tournament rules, and other goodies. We will also provide some important last minute information.
Damon.
We've got all our liquids, cremes and jells packed in our carry-on baggage, ready for the flight to SD. (J/K)
I can't wait to see what kind of insanity there will be at this end getting on the plane. Just to make sure, we plan to hit the airport 2-1/2 hours ahead of time - just in case. And, I can't forget to leave my car's remote at home - can't even take them on board - I'm gonna feel nekked!

All,
Here's the latest. The Dana only has 3 slips available to us, which will go to the 3 members boating to the event (i.e. AJ, Magic Rod, and Btravis).
I paid for the dock at Paradise Point for our weigh-in/fish count and awards ceremony. The dock will be available to us between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday. This is where everybody will need to go for the weigh-in deadline.
If any of you want to tie your boat to the dock at Paradise Point overnight (i.e. Friday night), they charge $3 per foot. You will need to pre-pay them prior to 8 p.m. at their office located on the dock. Paradise Point is just located across the bay from the Dana, less than 1/4 of a mile. Danny will provide a chart showing the location. If interested, you may want to make prior arrangements with them (when you call Paradise Point Resort, have the operator connect you to the Marina and talk to Ben) or have me go down there to secure a spot for you.
If you keeping your boat on a trailer Friday night, just make sure the trailer is attached to your truck at all times while in the parking lot of the launch ramp. You should not get hassled.
See you all at the kick-off bash and registration at 6:30 p.m. at the hotels "Firefly" restaurant.

The Tuna are being caught here and there, but not consistently. I got a report of YFT caught inside of the 390 yesterday, which is about 46 NM out. They are increasing in numbers with the one day sport fishing boats, so who knows, it may open up this Saturday. We will provide updated reports on Friday night. Keep you fingers crossed!
The Dorado and YT fishing was fabulous yesterday all around.

I dunno about out there but out our way NOAA is known to blow their forecasts pretty badly. Maybe your weather pattern is more predictable but it's generally too early to predict accurately until the day before, unless you've got a big high planted on top of you or a hurricane bearing down.
So keep your fingers crossed!

The only thing that concerns me here is the the 0 - 30 and 30 - 60 NM reports are almost always understated. The 30 - 60 NM reports are more reflective of the 60 - 250 NM reports.

Hugh,
I'm in the process of getting photos from those who participated and post them with a detailed write up. For a teaser, boat teams from Offshore Gary, Scrapper, and Magic Rod won 1st, 2nd, and 3rd respectively. The largest fish was a 22 or 23 lb. Dorado (also known as Mahi Mahi and Dolphin fish) caught by a member Offshore Gary's team. We got some great photos and will post them soon.

What a blast, I had a great time!
Thanks to Damon and Danny and all others involved in putting this together!
I'm still tired, but all ready looking forward to next year!
We're (Gail & I) still here in SD for a bit of vacationing but I wanted to say (now that this darn wireless internet is working again at the hotel) that it was GREAT to meet all of you SoCal Shamrockers (although some hauled down here from the Northern part of the state and even out of state) - a right decent and friendly bunch of ppl.
Even though I joined Jason (Exodus) in his "skunkedness" I had a good time and really enjoyed being out on his boat and wouldn't have missed it for the world (can we do it again next year but with many more fish? ). I'm glad we were able to make it out here for the Fest.
I was "wiped" on Sunday and am still tired today (of course stomping around the SD Zoo today for 9 hours didn't help :| ).
Damon... We have some pictures that we took after getting back to the dock I will try to get them uploaded to my notebook and send them off to you ASAP.
Again, thanks to you all for your hospitality to the "East Coasters". :D
