Heh, heh...

The 6 cyl engine looks like an ideal repower for a 17..... ;-)

I hated doing crank shaft bearing inspections on those sulzers. Had to wash the hair with GoJo 3 times or more with really hot water. I have a picture somewhere, if I can find I will scan and post of me standing on top of a extension ladder that is in the cylinder. To remove the heads on those, you actually stretch the bolts (they are 3 stories tall) and loosen the nuts by hand!

What fun that time of my life was. Back and forth between continents.

Can you imagine how many Gallons of diesel must be injected into each piston every time it fires. That thing is amazing. Glad I don't have to fill that thing up every time I go fishing!

Based on 7 lb/gal for fuel weight (may not be correct for "heavy" fuel oil) at full power, each cylinder calculates to get a shot of ~6.5 fl. ozs. of fuel, each stroke. My numbers may be faulty but that's still a big belt at each injection.

What I want to know is what the heck they use to turn that thing over to start it

Usually with most larger 2 cycle diesels ( 900 + TRUE Hp like EMD's) you must first prelube and sometimes preheat everything. This means first pumping lube oil VIA an electric motor thru the engine.

The engine compression releases are opened and the engine is "Blown Down" or turned over before starting. This builds up heat and allows for easier starting.

If balanced correctly with a large enough flywheel, it usually is not as hard as you may think. Mind you, I speak from experience with "larger" diesels but nothing this big. But the ideas are still the same.

Fuel is measured in tons. No reverse transmission. You actually stop the engine, and restart it turning backwards. (Thats one reson not to run right in front of a container ship.) When working on engine, starting etc, is turned over by small electric motor attached to flywheel.
