Just totalled my fuel purchases fro 2006.

Total gals: 512.8

Total $ : 1369.03

Total hrs: 99.80

GPH : 5.13

Cost/Gal.: $2.66

Hey guys, how am Idoing?

Based on hrs., I'm not fishin enough!!

Those figures reflect a mixed bag: trolling, drifting, inside harbor, and out in Gulf.

Benjaron,

Thanks for the insight on fish and cost/lb.!!

Where am I? Boca Grande. Keep my boat at Gasparilla Marina just off island.

Been meaning to call, but very busy with home rehab.

Today I go to Cape Coral and interview Geo. Boynton for the book on Shams I'm putting togather.

Is your Sham here in Fl?

So it costs you close to $14/hr every time you run the boat for the year.
More people need to calcuate their true costs/hour rather that some guessed at average fuel burn rate. Kind of like when Motor Trend does thier long range testing on vehicles- a true cost per mile.

Now add in the amount of money you paid for service/engine repairs. Divide that by total # hours. I'd like to see the outboard guys do that and still claim their engines are better than anything on the market.

Using rough numbers, my brother in law calculated in the $35- $40/hr when we added up all the gas/maintenance/service for a calendar year. (He's got a 265 CC Edgewater with twin 225F Yamahas. The 100 service on those 2 engines is not cheap. You do not want to know the price of Yamaha parts when the break-OUCH- luckily warranty has covered all that). When he shopped for boats, I told him budget $40 for every hour he runs the boat to get and idea of how much the true costs of ownership is (not including insurance or any major repairs). Did an "i told you so" when he first complained about those mainenance bills.

The numbers on my boat: About $12/hr every time I run the boat (adding up all may typical gas purchases, mantenance/mechanical work ect. over the year. It would be a heck of a lot less if I get others to pay for gas, and I've yet to have to pay for a major service on the engines due to a breakdown (and hope not to).

$12/hr is a far cry from $35/hr. My boat's usalbe space a heck of a lot more than his, and they both have a very simular layouts. But he can go 55 mph if he wants to- but I can pass on that.

Here is one for the wife to consider:

Now calcuate that total $$$ spent by the number of hours you SPEND ON THE WATER because of the boat. We probably run the boat for 2 hours, but spend 4-6 hours on the water. My cost per hour is now around $4/hr (If you include beer and food- that number greatly increases but hey you have to eat). Hard to find family entertainment for $4/hr-for the ENTIRE family.

Do I sound like a boat salesman yet? Maybe I should share this theory to my wife so she will return the couch......

Thanks for the insight.

I posted just for sake of conversation. I love the boat, love being out fish or no fish. It my best fun!!I don't give a&*() what it costs me.

Motor is still under warranty. And, so far just routine stuff. No big bullet to bite YET!!

If I had to worry about all that, why buy a boat. A boat is to be enjoy. If you can afford it then you should not worry what the cost is.
