View Full Version : External exhaust elbow??
I've noticed the newer diesel Macks are delivered with an elbow on the outside of the exhaust thru hull. Makes sense to eliminate/minimize any potential sea water surges. I'd like to add one but can't seem to find where to get one? The thru hull OD is 4". Any ideas? Maybe I just don't know the proper name to search on?

According to Bo in a previous post, call Shamrock Customer Service for the part.

You should be able to get those turn-downs through a Shammy dealer. I don't know how cooperative Sheltered Cove will be, they were kinda jerks at the Philly boat show.
Or, give Palmer Marine (Shamrock cust. svc.) a call, they're the ones who initially started putting them on.
Thanks Guys - it's on the way from Rebecca - should be here monday!
Skip - that's not it - it's a 90degree elbow (no flap) that they're putting on the new diesel macks, may reduce noise but more importantly help prevent sea water reaching the engine in an emergency stop scenario.

Post it for us all to see. Is that the kind of rectangular, hard plastic piece that mounts over the exhaust thru hull and puts the exhaust gasses under the surface?
The ones I've seen on current Shamrocks are made of a hard but still flexible rubber and look like big 90° street ells. They are held onto the thru hulls with hose clamps just like rubber flappers.

Am thinking of adding same thing to my thru hull exhaust. Want to see if turning the exhaust to exit near the sides of the transom will help eliminate the build up of diesel soot on the transom. Am wondering if getting the exhaust into the slip stream along the side of the hull will do any good.
Here's a picture of the exhaust elbow -- I have installed it and will post that picture later. I did have to trim it a bit as it just seemed to long. Pete
What's the label say? Any manufacturer's info?
Kurt, Here ya go -- Trident TRL-490. Picture shows how much I trimmed. I didn't want the thing acting like a scoop when the boat was up on plan! I used three 1" 1/4 - 20 bronze hardware with washers inside and out.

Those are not the ones I have seen. The one I'm looking for are rectangular and sit really close to the hull. Look like they have some ribs molded in. Anyone seen anything like that?

How would they work on our gassers in 3 inchers. They may quieten them down some while running,
Thanks for the info, ku2c...

The way he has it mounted looks exactly how the ones are from the factory are (at least as best as I can tell).

I would suspect that the turn-down would lower the exhaust sound a bit by directing it into the water. Certainly, when you're at low plane speeds, the tip might even be in the wash, adding extra muffling. If the P/N is in any way logical, I'd bet the 3" elbows are TRL-390. The Trident elbows I've seen in the past, with the same part number, did have ribs on the outer side of the curve. Possibly, they have changed the design since:

WOW seems interesting and a great idea. Please post some pictures and those that got it can you please post the price. I would love to get that smell out of the back area of the boat when the wind is blowing into the boat. If I don't end up selling PAPI i will put one on. Backing down would be no problem with one of this babies on.

Papi,
Elbow in my pictures (above) was $90'ish from Rebecca at Shamrock, now that we know the manufacturer and part number might be able to get it locally. I'll report back after wednesday when the boat is splashed and let you know if makes a difference with the smell.
Pete
Well the boat is in and runs great. No noticeable difference with the elbow on. Doesn't seem to have effected noise level (wasn't an issue anyway). As for smoke/smell - the white smoke did seem to stay lower but she only smokes until the engine warms up anyway. All in all I'm glad I added it just in case I ever have to make a quick stop. // Pete

Ku2c,
Great to know that there's no noticeable difference in noise!
I'm removing the elbow in order to install the Check Valve included in the exhaust system that I'm installing now.
Regarding smoke I believe it won’t be much of an issue, since as you say, after warming it’s gone. Also these “new generation” diesels are said to be “smokeless”…
(In fact there wasn't barely ANY smoke when I first ran the engine for test, some weeks ago)

Yes - just the little white smoke till she warms up. In my area my temp guage doesn't move until I get underway and put a load on her. Interested to see how your repower works out for you - should be terrific.
BTW I have very fond memories of a week I spent in Funchal, also thought about going back and visiting Porto Santo. You live in a very lovely place!
Good Luck -- Pete

Quick fix, the muffler I think you were refering to with the," flat close to the hull with ribs",is the Salisbury hydro muffler.[/url] Discontinued.
Sorry so late , lost deep in my grey matter.

Checked out Gilmarine and the part on reefbreaks boat are discontinued, I was told. They said they were the parts where the water was injected to the exhaust as it exited the exhaust pipe on a dry system that is surrounded by raw water.
SCOTT Thanks, I guess I'll just give up on this one.
