View Full Version : How about a two speed ZF tranny?

I remember quite a few years ago that a 2 speed ZF tranny was the way to go. Low for trolling and hole shots and High for cruising. Are they still available? Are they feasible in a Shamrock?

Only 1 I found:

pretty big..and I suspect big $$$'s too.
I haven't found a Shammy config that could handle the offset stock. I'd think a trolling valve would be a better option.

It still shows a trolling valve for the low speed gear. Kind of defeats the purpose. That angle would get the engine's oil pan out of the bilge water.Might make a bigger hump in the cockpit though.

I bet that would be just the ticket behind that new Yanmar/BMW. Or a 300 HP Cummins. You would run out of hull before the engine tops out.

You know overdrive transmissions in cars had a 30 % reduction & I think it is called a planetary gearbox attached to the back of the trans.I don't see why BW couldn't do this. Here is what it looked like it was not offset so the trans didn't have bulge off to the side.

Who deals in ZF in the Northeast? Mack Boring? I would like to get a ball park price and a dealers opinion on the feasiblity of this tranny in a Shamrock. It seems to me, this would be 'Mahonie' for trolling and docking. How much is an add on trolling valve? The tranny needs to be removed to install a trolling valve? When you take out the tranny, it would be a good time to rebuild/upgrade the tranny anyway? Maybe in the long run this two speed, if it works as advertised, would be the cat's far side?
Of course this is all still dreamin on my part, as I'm outside, lookin in.

Is that a two speed trans?

I got a hold of Gil in R.I. at ZF. He said that the ZF two speed transmission is more like an over drive. Meaning it has a 'first' gear that is like the normal ratio and 'second' gear that is an 'overdrive' or higher gear ratio or lower ratio number. He said they put them in high powered Cabo's and the like. He said a trolling valve is the only way.

No...that's an exploded view of the gear reduction section of a Vlevet Drive (71 or 72). No switching in/out of the gear reduction.

Gil Bashaw was in the field for some time before becoming the Service Manager. I have actually worked with him on larger commercial gearboxes. He knows his stuff as far as I am concerned. You could probably follow up with Dave Santos in Lauderdale if need be.//Ed

I think I'm going to call Fla. Why couldn't they make a two speed with a lower first and a 1to1 top?

How about a lock up convertor, it would have to be in the original design. I think they only reduce rpm's 10 to 15 %.

I've made several calls to several different poeple, no replys. Gil in R.I. said he wished ZF didn't made a two speed tranny. Oh well, It sounded good on paper.
