Well it looks like the date is set 9/28-29-30/07 and there's been some great ideas being talked about.
WHO'S IN:D
I'm in for any dates around that time (unless the sky falls or something).

I certainly hope to make it. New axles should give me the comfort to haul 175 miles. I'll have to arrange it with work to make sure I am off those dates (9-28 thru 9-30).

We will give it a try. But it is impossible for me to plan for next week much less two months down the road. I definitely want to poke around inside Cyacht's facility though.
Looks like we have 4 - 5 "gonna's" and a couple of "maybe's". It would be nice to have some more to make it worth Cyacht's generous offer of his facility.
There has to be a bunch of guys in the mid-MD area that can make it to this party!
Just bumping it to keep up awareness.

I was hoping to see at least two dozen of us so we could call around and try to squeeze group rates from the hotels. With it being in the Fall I think I can make that happen with out any big fuss. Besides like I said I'm bringing the Scotch for the winner and an extra bottle just to keep me warm. :D That is once I'm on the Hard;)

Truth is.... there's not much to see she's pretty bare-bones right now. I mean bare-booooooones, I'm talking a VHF raido and I'm not even sure if that works yet. Just give me untill the Shing Ding 3 and she'll be all fit-out including many fish stories.

Put me down in the definite MAYBE category.
I am putting together a fishing trip for the Wounded Warriors Barracks at Camp Lejuene the weekend of 9/21 and I am not so sure I can travel back to back weekends.
What is the deadline for confirming?
Striper Sniper
07-13-2007, 10:09 PM
that's a great question but I don't have an answer just yet. But I'll give it some serious thought and get back to you. Just one note Squid Row, I'll have a GREAT deal of respect for your commit to our troops and if all goes as planed you can count on me to attend next years Military Appreciation Day and if you do the Wounded Warrior event next year I'll do every thing in my power to be there as well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the kind words. My plan is to grow Military Appreciation Day events into a National event someday, so there will be plenty of opportunities for you to attend down the road.
In August we will announce our plans for MAD 2008 and we just received our 501 c 3 tax exempt status from the IRS this week, which is a huge accomplishment for us. We have been incorporated for less than 3/4 of a year now and have done some pretty good things, with plenty more in the works.
Anyway, back to the big event, I should know about the Shammy Shin Dig in another two or three weeks. If I can make it, I will gladly tow my boat up there too. Long distance towing is, unfortunately, something I do frequently.

Alex,
You have to go!
What kind of fishing is available around shindig time?
cyacht
07-16-2007, 11:53 AM
Regardless of the number of attendies, my place is available. It's no big deal.
Some tables & a concrete floor to drop stray crab pickings on...that's all I'm in it for...I don't need much of an excuse to have a crab feast! Fresh corn on the cob! Ahhhboys!
Fishing should be pretty decent. I fished saturday evening w/ 3 others, and had a great time. Limited out on Rock between 18"-20", some nice perch, more hardhead than I care to think about, and even some small blues (kept 1). Grilled them all.
I'd expect us to do about the same, except if it starts to cool down, we could possibly troll up some good sized Rock. They say the fall season is the best time for the biggest fish. Maybe not as frequent as spring, but better chances for a slob.

To answer your question, it's in Talbot county. Cyacht's place is right on US 50, Southbound side, just before it crosses the Choptank River.

Hey Guys
Thanks for the reply.Hopfully I can come up with the money to fix up the trailer. My wife is not to hip to the whole thing after 3 years of boat bills. At this time the trailer is good enought to haul the boat out and get it back to the house a few blocks. But a haul to Maryland will take some work.I was hoping it was going to be in jersey.

Are there any firm arrangements (group pricing, etc.) for places to stay (hotels, motels, etc.) yet and what is the ramp/launch/slip outlook for those bringing their boats?
cyacht
07-24-2007, 10:08 AM
I'd say, generally speaking, that Cambridge would be the most convenient place to stay. There are several hotels, and other lodging possibilities. The town of Oxford is nice (the Robert Morris Inn) but you can expect a fair price increase in anything on the Talbot County side of the river. Cambridge has several very nice ramps, and they are free. Talbot ramps cost $, and generally aren't as easy to use.
I spoke to a friend that is on the board at the Cambridge Yacht Club, and there are transient slips available. Once we get a little more firm of a handle on who is staying in the water, I'll make arrangements w/ him.
Here's a link a Dorchester County website, http://www.tourdorchester.org/
You'll find hotels/B&B's, and other info there.
If anyone has any specific questions, or needs to contact me, feel free to drop a line to rob@compositeyacht.biz

I'm still planning on being there. I'm really looking forward to this. It will be nice to put some faces to the people I've come to know.
And if it gets real small, we can all meet at some fish shack, eat, drink, and figure out what to do from there. I'll bet we can find a place that serves good food, and beer, too.
How about some of you left coasters? Kurt came out to visit you last year. Don't any of you want to come see what the mighty Chesapeake has to offer?
On a more serious note, it looks like I'm going to have to swap out my manifolds, risers, hoses, ect., before I make the trip. The plus is, I already have what I need. The not so plus is lack of time. It WILL be ready, no matter.

Not an east/west rivalry?! I'm not getting involved...
I'm a lover, not a fighter!
Just to show what we're in store for, here are some shots from this past weekend. This is James Island, for those that are familiar w/ the Bay. I've found some nice arrowheads there. And the fishing is great. In one shot, you can see a seperate island off in the background. That was all one island about 5 years ago. In the shot where we're sitting in a circle, and there's another island in the background... I was crabbing at 13 years old, and could jump that. Very sad. Erosion.
James Island is about a 45 minute run from Cambridge, and a great place to spend the day. One of my favorite spots on the whole Bay. But don't tell anybody. The days of spending the whole weekend on the island alone are long gone.

Hey, looks like areas down our way also. Love to do the exploring/relaxing thing. We have an island where this time of year we sneak off to at night, have a small bon fire, cook dinner and watch the meteor showers, sometimes camping over. I'm onboard for any of this. Looks like it will require a guide since appears to be fairly shallow inshore waters. Hope to be there by early afternoon Friday.

I've gotten a couple questions about slippage.
There is a marina next door to my shop, which is w/in walking distance. They have a few slips available, and are pretty reasonably priced. It's called Gateway Marina, and their number is 410-476-3304. Let them know you're with Rob from Composite Yacht. I've let them know what's going on.
Gateway & my shop are directly across from Cambridge, for those that haven't peeked at a chart. Literally a 5 minute ride.
For those staying in Oxford, I'd recommend Oxford Boatyard, 410-226-5101 Let them know I sent you. They probably won't give you a break on the slip, but might extend an extra helping hand. Great bunch of folks. I worked there for several years, and they became like family.
Oxford is about a 15 minute drive to my place, and about a 1/2 hour boatride.
Next is in Cambridge. I'd probably recommend the Cambridge Municipal Yacht Basin. It's easy to get to, is a 2 minute boatride from the ramp, and about 5 by car. The Cambridge Yacht Club is also based there, and I've placed a call to a friend that's a board member for more info.
I've mentioned the Hyatt as well, which is also an option. They have slips & rooms. But it is the Hyatt, and they hold themselves in high regard.
For those that have chosen to snooze onboard, more power to ya! We have lots of great spots to throw the hook.
There is a shower at Gateway Marina, if you don't want to rock the Sunshower. I think you could sneak into my slip, or sit on the bulkhead long enough to scrub down real quick. I think there are showers at the Yacht Basin too, but I'll know more about the accomodations there when my buddy calls back.
If you think you want to stay at Gateway, or in Oxford, I'd reserve soon. They fill up quick. The Yacht Basin I'm not so worried about filling up, because they just expanded.

Guys: what's the chances of still showing for the Saturday get together if I sell my boat before then? Got an offer today, guy wants to close the deal by next weekend (9/15). I asked him if he'd be willing to wait until early Oct. He said he'd prefer not.
My wife thinks it's kind of pathetic showing up without the boat. She asks me "What are we going to do... step up to a bigger one ;) and/or drool over the other boats while we are there?"
I don't mind but it does put me in a predicament. I will kinda (just a little bit) feel out of place but am sure that I'd get over it pretty quickly. She said she'd do anything that I decide. My heart may be broken but I'd still like to meet you guys.
So far as I know, there are already a couple who will be there without boats. You could hitch a ride with someone who has room.
Besides, it's all about us "Shammites" getting together and shootin' the bull. :p
Ken Kloostra's 26' Mack is right there in Cambridge (if it's still available).

I agree. Even if/when it is gone, I'll still have the "Shammite" blood in me and looking for another one. Besides, I do love to tinker and a boat gives you plenty of chances for that. I replied to Ken, asking if it still available. I would like to look at it while I am up there.

You won't have to do that, I'm game that Sat morn if it does not screw up other plans. The pic below is supposed to be the hot fishing spots on this area of the bay. I would say they are about 45-60 min from Cambridge, that right Cyacht? I live on the Miles river in the upper portion of the map but will have my boat in Cambridge that weekend. I mean what the hell, how bad could somebody be if they are from the Jersey shore?:D (I was born in Pt Pleasant and grew up in Bay Head).
I put a little green spot on Cyacht's place by the bridge in Cambridge and denoted Oxford on the map as well.

But she is so overwhelmed with the start of the Fall semester and all the wild changes the new Sup at USNA has come up wih that she can't think beyond her next instruction. grreatdog,
How far is it to cross the bay, rather than cross that bridge? I was told that it was about 45 minutes, tops. I've been over the bridge, on a Friday, and I'd do just about anything to avoid that. I was planning on splashing in Deale, or Shadyside, and heading over from there. It's not that bad of a ride, is it? Or should I be trailering over?
Mike
In sept. the bridge shouldn't be bad. You can splash anywhere on the western shore just keep track of the weather, chasing back across the bay if the weather gets nasty won't be that much fun.
Greatdog,
it's been awhile.
Hope you and yours have been well.
What happened last weekend, it doesn't sound like you're having fun?

How long of a ride to Trappe, from Shadyside?

Eye - You have a 1/2 hour to 3/4 hour to reach Annapolis then it takes me almost exactly an hour to get to Cyacht's place from Annapolis. DBM is right, the bridge will not be bad then. Trailering does seem like the best option to me. You never know about the Bay in late Fall.
I would say that boat time is about right if you have enough boat for the conditions - whatever those might be. By boat either West River or Deale would be good. Then cross the Bay, go behind Poplar Island (if you are out of West River), take the Knapps Narrows cut (I don't like going around the point because it is always rough) and then head straight up the Choptank. But remember that it could be a nasty quastering chop crossing the bay your direction and especially crossing the mouth of the Choptank.
DBM - I launched into the Severn River washing machine from the old seaplane Ramp at David Taylor Research Center and had the waves knock the bilge plug out of my boat. It was an ugly scene.
How is life with your boat on the other side of the Bay?
Greatdog,
Sorry to hear that, last weekend must not have been good for the boating gods, i had my brother drop me at the ramp over at belevue. With that full moon, the tide was way down and when the trucks tires were in the water the bottom of the boat was barely wet. I had him back down fast and hit the brakes and finally got her off the trailer. just as she slid off though, my brother ran out of gas. It was alot of fun trying to pour gas from an outboard tank into a jerry can than into his truck. Luckily we were launching late and the ramp was not busy.
This year, the boat is running buetifully. After a couple of years of real problems, she seems to be running great. Although this time out I did loose top end, but i think it's just the fuel filter.
thanks for asking. I'm trying to make it out to Cyachts with the boat, if i do, you're certainly welcome to join me, if your shammie isn't up for it.
take care.

Prag, the map is pretty spot on, but alot of those spots are kinda seasonal.
Figure a 1/2 hour to get to the mouth of the Choptank from my place. I'd be willing to bet, we'd be able to get some good fishing in w/o even leaving the
'tank. But, if you look a little south, you'll see James Island (in the mouth of the Little Choptank, and that's a favorite haunt. James Isl is probably 45 minutes from the shop. The isl is cool (as you can see from my earlier pics) because you can get off the boat and hang out, or cruise around it casting. I fished around James this past sunday and had a ball. Alot of small stripers, but we had plenty of action, and still left w/ dinner.
Trolling should be starting to heat up by then, too. Anywhere from inside Stone Rock, to #10 & #12 & down below the diamonds. The plane wreck is a well known bottom fishing spot, and working tidelines w/ bucktails & other artificials around most any point should be productive.
As I mentioned earlier, fishing in the Bay this summer has been off the hinges, and I'm praying it continues right into fall.
David, short of mechanical failure, I see no excuse for not coming by boat! As far as I know, you're the closest FTC'er to us. You could dam near paddle to the shop!
But for those not bringing any fiberglass w/ them, don't fret. I'm comfortable saying we'll have plenty of room for everyone.
Mike, I'll agree w/ everyone in that, it's probably going to be easier to tow to us. I doubt the traffic will be bad, and by the time you tow south to somewhere like Deale or Shadyside, you'd almost be here. And like GDog said, if it does blow up (even to 15) a trip back across is going to be misery. Especially when you consider that at that time of the year our prevailing winds are most likely going to be NW so you'll be taking it on the chin.
Up near me in the river, it'd have to be blowing a gail before we couldn't find somewhere to ride. Fishing options might be less, but we could still do a cruise/raft up beach bar-b-q.
Mike,
I think your question got answered. I think towing across the bridge is your best bet. By the time you get to shady side, or chesapeake beach you'e only have 15-20 minutes to Cyacht shop.
We've got a house that faces the mouth or the choptank, and that time of year we can get spray from the waves breaking on the bulkhead on the 2nd floor windows of the house, and the house in 100' from the water.
Rob,
It's not the getting there that will be the problem, it's the family that's going to be the problem. Taking the five of us down there in our 20'r is not that much fun. Excatly the reason for our other discussions.

Well the Friday night get together at Cyachts is going to be about what time? There is a nice little restaurant/Bar on the water in Cambridge called Snapper's that would not be a bad place to get togeteher for those arriving earlier. Just a suggestion, it's only a 5 min drive, if that, to Cyachts from there.
cyacht
09-18-2007, 10:44 AM
I was thinking Snappers. Food & price is decent (jamaican/mexican flair), it's on the creek, and they have the room. I was kindof in a holding pattern until we got a halfway firm head count, because we'll definitely be needing some reservations.
All this is making my mouth water and my throttle hand itch!
Per Rob and Pragmatist's suggestions, maybe we should update the list with info as to when crews (and numbers) will be arriving so there can be a head count for a restaurant rendezvous on Friday evening. Probably need to do this reasonably soon so that the reservations can be made in time - I think there's something else going on in the Cambridge area that weekend since the motels seem to have filled for reservations - maybe I'm wrong. I'll start by adding my info and begin the dinner tally (I'll update the list as ppl post their scheds):
BTW, not to wet-blanket this thing but what might be the plan if the weather goes badly South for the event? Y'know, one of those "H" things arriving?

The reason some of the lodging is getting tight is because Cambridges' Octoberfest is going on that weekend. It's taking place right next to the ramp most of us will probably use to launch. I don't forsee this being a problem for us.
I've also been in contact w/ the restaurant where we're having dinner.
We have a couple of options. We can eat out on the deck, inside downstairs, or inside upstairs.
The deck is nice, but it is outside, and it will be the end of September. If it rains, or is cold, (or both) it could suck.
If we eat inside, I'd probably prefer upstairs. They don't seat the general public upstairs, so we'd have it to ourselves.
The thing is, they can only seat 25 upstairs. I know we aren't there yet in numbers, but I have a feeling some may come out of the woodwork as the time draws near.
I'm trying to get this nailed down, because the restaurant didn't seem to like it when I told them I wanted to make a reservation for 15 to 30 people.
If it looks like your going to make it, go ahead & post up. I'd rather tell the 30, and we be short, than the other way around.
Thanks,
Rob
Well, the long term WX forecast looks a little unsettled for the end of next week (a possible rain cycle for the weekend, but we all know how reliable those things are!!!), so an outdoor dinner may be a little risky, as Rob noted.
The Admiral used to coordinate things like this for conferences and said for group restaurant reservations it's best to overestimate by 10% to 15%.
If an event is catered at your (or another) facility, it's best to underestimate by ~10% (they should always prepare more food).
Help Rob out with the count!

Weather does looks nice, should I change the dinner reservation to outside?
Fishing has been good. Trolling hoses (eels), and tandem bucktails and tsunami's have been productive. As it's been cooling down, I think the fish have been starting to school a little, so jigging should be picking up. White jig heads w/ shad darts, hammered spoons, gotcha's can all produce.
For those looking to get an early start, high tide will be right arouond 530 am. Casting top water lures, bucktails etc should be good around structure, and around the shoreline. Also shallow trolling can be good.
For those looking to live bait fish, small bottom rigs can round up some spot (but they'll start thinning out) or perch, then out to the mouth of the 'tank for livelining. This will bring nice rocks & blues as well.
Drift or bottom fishermen can score a mixed bag w/ peelers, blood worms, and even squid(the latter being the prefered bait). If folks want peelers, let me know ahead of time, and I'll score some near home. Peeler would absolutely be my first bait choice.
For those not wanting to fish, and looking more to relax, raft up, etc., Trappe Creek is perfect for this, and maybe a 1/2hr run from cambridge...tops. Sand beach, and it's deep on the backside of the sandbar going in, so you can easily beach the boat.
Also just above the choptank bridge is bollingbrooke, which also has a sand beach that you can get right on. 15 minute run from the ramp.
Both of these creeks are well protected.
Lots of creeks to explore for those that can't sit still.
There's a restaurant in Taylors Island if someone wanted to cruise for lunch.
(that's right near my beloved James Island)
Tilghman is close, Oxford is too, and for the intrepid souls, you could reach Annapolis or St.Michaels w/in 2 hrs.
Just some stuff to think about.
Also, if you need to reach me, the office # is 410-476-4414
My cel # is 443-521-6161
Am I missing anything?
Am I missing anything?Any word on the "hunt/cruise" from MW (I thought he might have been talking you about it)? Or, is everyone thinking fish or plain sightseeing? (don't forget the license!!!)

Peelers are crabs that are just about to shed. Rip the backshell off, flip'em over, and cut it into 6 pieces.
Once the back of the shell opens, and you can see a little bit of soft crab peeking out, then they're "bustners". You let them go ahead & shed out to a softy.
If they shed out, and you don't get to them for a fried softcrab sammich, they start to toughen up, then they're papershells.
On the scavenger hunt, it just seemed that not many had any real interest, so we said heck w/ it.

Count me in for dinner Fri. night, riding around or fishing if someone has room on Sat., and the breakfast thing Sun. I'm so confused now I'm not planing on anything except getting there on Fri about 2 P.M. EASY reads this site and knows that if he wants to go, all he has to do is ask, and I'll pick him up. If there is no room on a boat Sat, I'll do the Oxford sightsee thing, or hang around Composite Yachts working the chopper gun. See ya'll Fri.

Yeah, I was, but work interfered, and now I have a bearing and hub out in the Excursion. It's being fixed, as we speak ( I hope). Lucky I found it this morning, instead of tomorrow morning, while on route!
Rob, thanks for the crustacean disortation! I am familiar with softshells, that is probably my favorite sandwich in the whole wide world. I am, however, totally ignorant of all the other stages.
Quick Fix, Glad to hear that you're going to show. As long as none of my brothers decide to show, you, or anyone else that wants to, are more than welcome on my barge. It's only a 20', but there's room.

Here's how I think it looks ATM (Rob, pls update/modify if needed):
Friday, informally meet at Composite Yacht (see attached map), for those who can make it at whatever time is convenient for you. Planned dinner at Snapper's Waterfront Cafe (near Cambridge Yacht Club), reservations are for 7 PM on Fri., again, for those who can make it.
Saturday's schedule is "loose" but assume starting sometime in the AM. Activities may include sightseeing, fishing or whatever - this may get more formal on Friday afternoon/evening.
Saturday afternoon (time TBD), Shindig at Composite Yacht - food & libations until we get thrown out!
Sunday morning, some discussion about possibly a breakfast "cruise" to Harrison's in Tilghman. Later - head home or whatever plans ppl may have.

Sounds about right to me.
I think I'm going to go ahead & change our reservation for outside.
I'll be here at the shop the majority of the time on saturday, so we can begin whenever. I figured I'd start the grills/steamers at around 3 oclock or so. Again, it doesn't matter to me, I can start cooking at noon.
Sunday & beyond is all up to you.
Unless you're camped out in my den, I doubt you'll see me on sunday. But for those sailing out of the choptank, I'll wave as you go by, while I sit sipping coffee on my porch! :)
Don't be afraid to speak up w/ questions, concerns, or ideas.

Being jealous of the West coasters, I made a post on 1/16/07 suggesting a get together and have been pumped ever since. Well since I have screwed everything up so badly, I won't be there. Called to get a room yesterday and checking today and the nearest room is in Annapolis. Wife not talking to me, friends mad at me, boats in shop with no rudder and I'm stuck at home cause my truck is still in the body shop. What a spectacular gathering has been put together. What a great time will be had, I really can not believe I'll miss it. Party hardy, crack a crab and hoist a brew for me. And please, feel sorry for me.

Got a chance to introduce Stripper Sniper to the "super dry ride" of a non-spray railed Shamrock - more than once on the way out...
Need to de-zizz from the drive home - look for pics, probably tomorrow.
Tom Bennett! What a great job on the photos!!! They will probably put ours to shame - don't know that we took too many out on the water.
Sorry to hear of MW's auto misfortune. He and QF were missed.
There is (hopefully) always next year.
Outstanding event, great food, great people and great fun!
Rob many thanks for all the hospitality and keep us posted on the 26'er.
Tom great pix and the shrimp & scallops were wonderful!
Ken - many thanks for the ride!
Morning Wood - sorry to hear of your mishap, you and Quick Fix were missed.
Musky - Ken (Pragmatist) and I hit the water 6am Saturday and made it down the river to just short of the bay. We got beat up and very soggy (~4' rollers) but we kept at it, trolling all kinds of things but couldn't buy a bite. Met the rest of the crew up the Trappe about mid-day where we enjoyed the sheltered water and dryed out. Ken has one clean 20' and really tried hard to find those Md. Rock fish. But I had a great time and didn't have to clean any fish :)
Only potential down side was the early forming of an "Admiral's Alliance" - could be trouble ahead :)
And Kurt and StriperSniper thanks for pulling this thing together!!

No need to thank me, I had a great time, and only wish we had more time.
W/ all the laughter, food and things going on, although it felt like we've known each other for years, I never got a chance to really to get to know everybody.
It's funny, w/ some boats, the owners are fairly similar. Building contractors & bigtime landscape guys are the norm.
Never will you find a more interesting amalgamation of folks than at a shamrock owners gathering.

Thats what keeps me motivated. Solutions and value added projects. Sometimes it is better to just let go, and defer to a higher power

Unfortunately, Buck Algonquin could not ship the rudder fast enough and I had already canceled my reservations. In retrospect, I should not have canceled, and just gone without the boat, but once we were without rooms, we could not get others. I really messed this one up.

Below is the rig. About 12ft mono leader between the hose and one of those in-line sinkers. Pretty heavy, 12 to 16 oz size so it will go deep when trolling fast. Anywhere between 5 and 6 knots and I must say most hits were closer to 6.
But hell I'm no pro, only tried em once. I just did what some guy on the dock told me to.
