Hey all, quick update here. From PMs and posts, I anticipate about 10 to 11 boats. It looks like the Albies may stick around for the event with some larger yellowtails in the mix (see jcarvour's fish report). But with fishing being what it is, things can change quickly.
For those targeting the tunas, I would get some small jet heads (black and purple, red/green/white/yellow (i.e. Mexican flag), Gerry Garcia, zuccinni (white/yellow/orange/green), black and green, etc.), cedar plugs (Natural 4" jr., natural 6", and a black and purple cedar plug), a couple of Yozuri or rapalas (4" types), and some assorted feathers (zuker zuccinni broom tails, mexican flags, black and purples, red and whites, Gerry Garcias, etc.).
The most important thing is to make sure your bait tank system is operating properly. DO NOT over crowd your bait tank, which will kill them off. The idea is to have the happiest, healthiest, and most hyperactive sardines/anchovies on steroids out there at the fishing grounds.
Good luck.

Unless you are after Marlin, all you will need are live bait hooks for the offshore stuff.

I'm glad you stepped up to a larger bait tank. That should handle 1 scoop of bait very well.

I used to eat them as fish tacos during my surfing trips to Boca de Pascuales (Mainland Mexico). They were pretty good then. However, I had some in Puerto Vallarta on a recent trip and it almost made me puke.

Make sure you have live bait hooks from size 4 to 3/O. It wouldn't hurt to have some fluorocarbon line as well.
A few weeks ago, the Albies were only biting the jigs and were not touching the live bait. Today, a friend of mine went out and trolled all over the place with no success. After a while, he finally made to connection why all of the other boats were not trolling and sitting for long periods of time in one spot. They were stopping on meter marks and soaking live bait.
The Albies were only biting live bait today, mostly anchovies. He only had success using 20# test line with an anchovy on a small hook. It took him about 30 minutes to bring in an Albie that was pushing 35+ lbs.
I match the hook size to the bait fish. If they are the small "pin head" chovies, I use between a #4 and #2 hook with a small weight (1/8 oz. split shot or a small 1/4 oz. sliding egg). The larger anchovies can take between #2 and #1 hook (probably a good idea to use a small weight here as well). For the sardines, I use between a 1/O and 3/O hook. This will work for both offshore and inshore fishing for all species.
I'm sure you know these things already, but others may benefit from this. Here are some common mistakes I see people make fishing our waters:
1. Fishing with the wind to their backs. You always want to fish with the wind to your face.
2. Not knowing what their bait fish is doing. You always want to be able to feel the bait fish on the line, letting them run as far out as they want to go. If they bolt back to the boat, reel them in and fling them out further away from the boat. Bait fish are not stupid! They know that they'll get eaten out in the open water and the safest place is under the boat.
3. Fishing with bad bait. You want to fish with bait that is lively and clean, not bait fish that is bloodied, injured, or weak. It's also a good idea to change your bait out every 10 minutes or so (the sportfishing deckhands recommend changing your bait out every 2 minutes, but we do not have the luxury of large bait systems on our boat like they do).
4. Not following the fish. You always want to follow the fish to the point that your rod tip is always pointing straight out away from the boat. I've seen people trying to fight fish sitting down on my boat with their line wrapping the back of people's legs who are standing at the rail fishing. Not cool.
5. Dropping the bait net in the tank, scooping a net full of bait, or putting bait fish that fell on the deck back into the bait tank (i.e. poor bait fish management). Don't do this! You should scoop no more bait fish than you and others need. Each time the bait fish comes in contact with the bait net (or other objects for that matter), they get injured and you shorten their life span. Lively bait fish get injured by running into other injured or dead bait fish as well.
Am I missing anything here?

Should be plenty of room. Call me if you would like to ride and share costs. My cel is 818-288-7154 or PM me. Boat is insured, VA, VHF, GPS, Compass, Porta Potty, BBQ, Coolers, Kill Bag, Rod Holders and Bait Tank, Life jackets 2, Throw Cushions 5, Bring your own PDF if you want. I have Gaffs, 1 long, 1 short. Ice! Bring 10lbs or 20lbs.
ALCOHOL
Sorry, i'd rather drink in the bar w/you after a successful trip than risk MY LIFE or your's by being buzzed on the big water. Bring lot's of water or lemonade or soda.
I like to have a BBQ for lunch so you have to be able to catch a fish or two or be stuck eating Bratwurst, NY Strips, or Tri-Tip, maybe even a burger or a hotdog.
I'll be there early to beat the traffic. I plan on heading out after dinner and returning Sat PM

All,
We're currently putting everything together for all the boat crews and organizing the event so it all goes smoothly (i.e. time, effort, and resources at work now). Other than Palmer1 (a possible show because his current workload may conflict with the event), can I assume that everybody in the list above are definite shows? If not, please let me know pretty quickly here. If there are any other boaters who want to enter the event, please let me know ASAP so we can make the proper arrangements.
I will check with the dock master either tomorrow or Saturday to see if there will be additional slips available for the event.
Stay tuned!

You can get both at the Dana Landing Market right next to the launch ramp.
Damon
08-04-2007, 03:24 PM
Mexican permits are available at the Dana Landing Market. However, they have a hefty mark-up on these. Here are the following prices:
Weekly Fishing Permits: $40 per person
Annual boat permits (they only sell 1 year) for small boats (17' - 22' 11"): $50
Annual boat permits for medium boats (i.e. 23' - 29' 11"): $95
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you want to save some money and get these permits at cost, you can get them directly at the official Mexican agency (i.e. "Oficina de Pesca"). Here are the prices:
Weekly Fishing permits: $22.90
Annual boat permits for small boats (17' - 22' 11"): $32.55
Annual boat permits for Medium boats (23' - 29' 11"): $65.10
The place closes at 2 p.m. on weekdays, parking is a pain (near down town San Diego), and they only take money orders or cashier checks. What I can do is get a list of people who need permits and get the registrations for the boat permits on Friday afternoon and buy all of these in a single trip to the oficina de Pesca. If I get enough people/boats to do this, it may be worth the trip for the savings. However, I don't want to do this for only a few permits.
Any thoughts??

I will need the names of each person and the city/state they live in as it appears on their drivers license. I will also need the boat registration to get the boat permit. I'll plan to head over to the Oficina de Pesca at 12:00 noon on Friday to get all the permits.
Mistress, do you want me to do the same for you crew? It's well worth it. Right now, the fishing is GOING OFF at the Cross (where the 32 degree and the 118 degree lines cross), which is well into Mexican waters. On Bloodydecks, a guy reported fishing there on Wednesday and nailed 40 YTs along with some YFT, Dorado, and Albacore (the near perfect salad mix). Others have been fishing there since then with success. If the event was held tomorrow, I would leave at 2:30 a.m. and head to the Cross.
If anybody else wants me to pick up some permits for them, let me know.

Yes, that dash line represents the Mex line. You'll be in Mexican waters about 15 miles south of Mission Bay. Here's a chart that shows it better (you'll need WinZip):
http://home.san.rr.com/bix/Spots/ColorSanDiegoAreaFishingSpots.zip
O/T, I know, but... How far out does Mexico claim as territorial waters (12mi, 200mi)? Or, does it depend on what you're doing as to where the line is drawn (e.g. just cruising or fishing)?
BTW wish all you guys bon chance next weekend. Wish we could be there.

My buddy Mark just came back from fishing the 1010 trench and had to drive by the house and show off the three toad Yellowtails over 30# they caught off a paddy. They lost several more as there is no guarantee with fish this size. The water was too warm for Albies at the 1010 as a highway of warm water runs from the lower 500 right on up to the Butterfly. Plenty of yellowfin schools around and Dorado are on the paddies here now. The bite should start to go off at any time.

All,
I spoke with the dock master at the Dana hotel and there are 3 slip spaces available. However, people staying in a room at the hotel have priority to them. I know of the following who are staying in a room at the Dana hotel during the event:
1. Magic Rod
2. Myself
Is there anybody else staying at the hotel during the event?
With Magic Rod boating to the event, he'll definitely need a slip. However, I plan to donate my slip space to Mistress because the total length of his Dodge diesel truck, camper, and trailer is around 65' long, which is way too long for the parking lanes at the launch ramp. Therefore, he'll need to launch his boat, diconnect his trailer in one lane, park his camper truck in the lane next to it, and chain lock his trailer to his truck.
This leave us with one extra boat slip space, which will go whoever has a room at the hotel. If there is nobody else staying at the hotel, then I plan to raffle off the extra slip (i.e. picking a number bewteen 1-50, flipping a coin, etc.). Keep in mind that a slip or two usually becomes available at the very last minute, so we may be able to accomodate others as well.
The attached photo is a Yellowtail caught yesterday (source: Saluki on "Bloodydecks" http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/offshore-reports-southern-california-usa/78653-hanna-her-friends-get-bloody-8-4-real-bloody.html ). These guys got into a crazy wide open bite on the Albacore in the afternoon (read report with all the photos). Looks like the bite is currently centered around the east and West Butterfly Banks.
There are YFT, Albacore, Dorado, and YT being caught fairly consistently (YT bite can be wide open if you find the right kelp paddy) if you go to the right location.
This should be a lot of fun!!!

More for regulation. If the park rangers can see that the trailer is "attached" to the tow vehichle one way or another, they will make the connection that your vehicle is legally parked there (i.e. parking for vehicles with trailers only).
Never heard from Danny re: shirts and stuff.
Danny is not going to respond to each request. Apparently, he got a ton of requests by people all over the place. I believe his wife is helping him out on much of this stuff. In previous years, he always came through for everybody without responding to each person's request. Either way, you and everybody else who submitted order forms or PMs are in good hands.

Park it at the Dana launch ramp parking lot. I suggest that you move the truck and trailer to other parking lanes every evening or two so it doesn't stay in one place too long drawing attention.
Also what kind of rigs for Swordfish and Marlin. I plan to catch both... I have some 175Lb leader, and need to know how big and what kind of hooks to put on it?
Can anybody help him here? I've never targeted Marlin or Swordfish. Ali, if you are still around, please provide some tips here. As for live bait fishing, Marlin will flat out go after live mackerel. Maybe have a local tackle shop rig you up with a couple of trolling lures and get some tips from them (i.e. locations, trolling speed, etc.).
Butterfly banks look to be a good 50 ish miles... Whew long ways out. I would like to buddy up with all heading out that way, spread out a bit search and destroy.
During the kick-off bash, we will have wireless internet to get the latest fish reports and share with everybody. Most of us will decide were to go based on the reports from Friday and I'm sure anybody will be more than happy to buddy boat with you to any of these locations. The 22 WA has pretty good range, but you should bring about 10+ extra gallons of gas to be sure, especially with all the weight you will have on your boat from the 5 guy'z (Yikes!).

The hotel and slips are right next to the launch ramp and ramp parking. It is easy walking distance. Its a big parking lot but the deal is trailors are supposed to be attached to a tow vehicle. Chained to your truck should qualify as attached. It should be no problem tailgating or sleeping in a camper at the ramp parking lot. Hope this helps.

I have to work until 12:30 on Friday. My plan is to arrive at the Dana at 1:00 p.m. to get money from people who need mexican fishing/boat permits and head over to the Oficina de Pesca.
Also, I plan to swing over to a local ice company that is a few miles from the Dana landing to pick up ice. It's around $6.75 for a 50 lb. bag of ice and $3.75 for a 25 lb block of ice (they have larger blocks as well). They also have dry ice there if anybody is interested. If anybody wants me to pick up ice for them, let me know how much you want and give me the money when I get to the Dana so I can buy the ice for you.
Zach, are you asking where to stash your trailer by it self or your truck and trailer? If you are talking about only you trailer, then I would check with the place you are staying to see if they have parking for it. You can not have it at the Dana parking lot unless it is attached to your vehicle.

YEE HAW!! The bigger Albacore are back in close outside the 302. A guy reported 30+ lb. YFT boiling on bait balls at the 371, but they could not get them to bite on anything. and I've been told that these are in the 30+ lb. range (the YFT under the porpoise are the small footballs).
This may shape up to be our best Fish Fest event fishing-wise!
Message revised in my quote above (my goof). As of today, they seem to be mostly at the E-butterfly. Another area that seems to be of interest is the San Clemente Basin bouy, which is 37 miles from the point (i.e. near the 43).
Let's hope for outstanding fishing.

It's too bad I'm not able to get my Shammy in time for the FF4. Would of loved to meet more Shammy owners in SoCal. Let the GoodTimes roll...
Edited:
I will be there after all, thanks to UncleSurf.

Here's another report
Fished the 371 and spotted a monster paddy. Our bait was horrible worst all year, wonder why because there is bait everywhere?? Damn lazy bait company. WTF?? My Bro was reeling in his bait and he got nailed by an Albie, boils ensued and we were on three fish at one time. We pulled about 6 Albies, 2 yellows and I was lucky enough to get a Bluefin off that paddy. We boxed the area for one more jigstrike on an Albie. We headed to the 390 and had 6-7 more jigstrikes on Albies. Our freezers were full at home so we released two Ablies. We saw a huge Hammerhead shark about 300lbs and tried baiting it but it was totally lit up.....probably completely lost. All in all one of the better days Ive had this season......

Marlin taste like crap. You better let me take them off of your hands so you won't have to deal with them after weigh in.
