Fishing Tournament

Welcome to this year’s FF V Fishing Tournament!

The event will start at 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening, August 1st, with a “Kick-Off” bash/dinner at the Firefly Restaurant (outside patio) where registration will take place. Upon registering for the event, boaters will be allowed to depart anytime thereafter (those who want to cruise out Friday night) with everybody due back in on Saturday, August 2nd, at 6:00 p.m. for weigh-in time.

Please Note:
Entry fee is not a requirement to participate in Fish Fest V. Participants who wish not to pay will not be eligible for jackpots in either categories

Boat Category
This will be based on a point system (see “Tournament Rules” below). The boats accumulating the most points will be awarded cash and prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. If any of the boats are tied for the most points, the heaviest 3 fish will determine a tie break. Any boat who desires to enter this category will be required to pay a $100 entry fee for this event, which will go into the jackpot for this category with a 50-30-20 percent split for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively.

Individual Category
This category will be optional with one individual catching the heaviest fish being awarded cash and prizes. Anybody who desires to enter this category will be required to pay $25 into this jackpot with the one winner taking it all.

Tournament Rules
1). Yellowtail, Albacore, BFT, YFT, Bigeye Tuna, Dorado, White Seabass, and Halibut: For each of these species, the first fish will be worth 5 points and each additional fish will be worth 1 point; up to a maximum of 5 fish for each species per boat (i.e. 9 points maximum for each of these species).

2). All other species will be worth one point up to a maximum of 5 fish for each species per boat (i.e. 5 points maximum for each species).

3). Only finned fish will count towards the tournament (i.e. no sharks, skates, rays, marlin, swordfish, eels, squid, lizard fish, etc.).

4). Excluded fish include "bait fish" (i.e. anchovies, sardines, mackerel, etc.), Skipjack, Bonito, Barracuda, Mackerel, Sanddabs, and rock cod/fish.

5). Only fish caught by line fishing with rod and reel will count towards the tournament.

6). All fishing regulations for California and Mexican waters will be applicable to the tournament. Any violation will be grounds for disqualification for the entire boat crew.

ENJOY!!

All,

We moved this up a bit to increase our chances of getting into the Albacore bite.

All of July and the first part of August in 2007 was great Albacore fishing. The waters were very fishy in 2007, but there were too many sauries (i.e. small tasty fishies) they were feeding on. Therefore, they were not much into eating our bigger "slug" sardines. Jason and I caught all of our YFT and Albacore on jigs (i.e. no live bait!) last year.

Also, I would like to encourage more people to stay at the Dana. When you split the cost of a room with your boat crew (say 3 people), it's not that bad. For example, if the room costs $400 for 2 days, it only comes out to $133 per person for those 2 nights ($400 divided by 3 people), or $66 per night. It's really worth it!

When the date of the event is closer, we will ask for a head count.

The parking Nazi pissed me off. They'd rather have me hang out 13' into each fairway than take 2 spots as far from the ramp as possible. Beotch!

I guess overall it was pretty cheap camping (which they don't allow), but....

Who ever heard of 40' truck/trailer spots at a salt ramp? Am I supposed to tow a 26' salt boat with a Mini Cooper?

I'll think about it. Going longranging this year and it may be my only trip to Sandy Eggo.

Yes.

I sent pics of what it looked like as parked...and what it would have looked like if I followed the "rule" (hanging 13' into EACH fairway). I also had the name and statement of the Ranger that was out there measuring spots due to recurring complaints by boaters.

I got back a "sorry, but that's the rule" letter with a required payment and option to take it to the next level of appeal. I sent the funds with 2nd appeal request and never got a response. Flokkers!

How lame. I guess they expect you to block the fairways.

I think really they just want my money and are too dumb to realize I did the right thing, though outside of the rulebook.

As many accidents as I've seen at launch parking lots, I ain't putting my gear at that risk. Half the time, someone's dragging a trailer and don't even know they wiped out someones vehicle, boat, trailer, etc. An accident report would likely say I was hanging out in the fairway illegaly.

Were you there when we were putting Mistress back on the trailer? If you were, remember that gal that was trying to dock that boat? Damn near killed her BF, damn near piled up the boat...but never dropped her smoke. Now..put her in the truck dragging the trailer to the ramp.

Ya..I know..preaching to the choir. Only $40 but left a bad taste. I would have gladly paid $40 for proper parking.

Longrange trip is June 18-24. We still have a few spots left on the charter. Limited load of 24 for $2K including tip. Would rather see a Shamrocker than a walk-on to fill the spot(s). Royal Polaris is the boat and we're supposed to have a hand-selected allstar crew.

Very tempting. The house construction project will keep me from doing a trip like this. It has always been my dream to do a long range trip. I would love to do the trip to Clipperton Island.

Any FTC member who wants to experience a trip of a lifetime catching tuna, I would strongly recommend this trip. This is a very light load for this big boat (113 ft. x 29 ft.). Giant Yellowfin tuna at 200+ lbs are not uncommon on this boat (some caught at 300 lbs). BFT, Albacore, Dorado, Wahoo, and YT are other fish caught on these trips.

This trip will likely concentrate on YT's and troll down to the upper islands and back for whatever's on the surface (Schoolie YFT's, Bluefin, Albie's, Dodo's) while keeping a constant vigil for kelp patty's along the way that can hold most anything, but usually YT's. Likely some other bottomfish and grouper while on the YT grounds as well. "Cow" YFT's would not be expected, but you can't count anything out.

Note the YT's are of the "homeguard" variety. These aren't open ocean fish where you just need to keep them out of the kelp patty. Typically you'll be catching with live Mack's on dropper loops or yoyo'ing jigs off the bottom on anchor. When you hook up, the fish will try to "rock" you and it's a Mexican stand-off for the first few minutes. If you can't turn his head you're hosed. 50# and up tackle is required to keep from being "rocked".

I stand corrected...it will be a full load of 35. The fee does include a predetermined tip and other things. That's why it looks more expensive than just booking your own. Approx Cost: $2000.00 with fuel surcharges, permits and a 15% tip.

Some cool folks onboard and there should be no asshats...just a lot of jackasses (in a positive way). Not sure if/when they'll open it up, but I'm sure walk-ons would be the last resort.

All,

Fish Fest V is fast approaching!! Please put the word out about the event and let's have some FUN!! I will work on getting the slips (we may be able to accomodate everybody this time) and Danny will announce the event on Bloody Decks to get the word out to the Shamrock owners who do not go on this site but browse Bloody Decks. So far, I know of 5 (possibly 6) definite shows. There will be about 2 or so members looking for rides as well for those who have space available.

Please consider getting a standard room at the Dana Inn. It's not that expensive when you spilt the cost with your boat crew and it's nice to have a full bathroom and a place to lay your head to chill out with an A/C.

Let's do this!!

If there is anyone else needing room on a boat, I'll probably show up with mine on the trailer and buddy boat out to the popular spots. I'm not too familiar with Albie fishin, but I would love to get out there and learn. Just plumbed the 2nd bait tank so I can have 2 different kinds of bait, have a 14 rod holder on roof, flat line release clips for trolling,...etc.

Sorry for the late notice! Hope I'm not too late but I dont plan on being in the hotel or renting a slip.

Hey Jim, for sure thanks :) I'm planning on going to the ramp near Sundance. We'll talk more about times..etc. when it gets closer.

But I have 1 question...will i need a Mexican permit for my boat? or mexican fishing licenses? and what is the best way to obtain them?

JimDavis
07-19-2008, 03:32 AM
you don't need permit for your boat anymore.
If you're planning to fish in Mexican waters "yes" you do need a Mexican fishing license.
But even though I have Mex. fishing license I am not going to Mexico.
I know where my albies are...
Let me know when and where you'll be.

I'm coming down late that Friday night since I just found out my cousin decided to make me a godfather and they are having a meeting at the church starting at 8pm in Pasadena!! I'm not too happy about that...but nothing can keep me from going fishing.

I plan to be at the Sundance dock by 2am. When are you planning on leaving? If I leave after you I might have to radio you and find out how far ahead you are, or you may have to give up your secret numbers to me beforehand so we can meet up out there. PM me buddy

Damon
07-21-2008, 02:34 PM
You guy'z are killing me with this "secret number" thing!

These fish are migratory by nature and are always on the run. They never stay put in any one location. You can burn all the fuel you want, but if the conditions are not favorable, you'll get skunked. I suggest looking at the currents, temperature breaks, chlorophyll (i.e. water color):

www.tempbreak.com

Also keep an eye on the offshore fishing reports:

The "secret number" is our joke man!!!
Everybody knows that last year I went to Butterfly Bank and it was good to me.
So whoever wants those "secret" numbers go to that area.

During the last "Yellowtail Shootout" we went to San Clemente with Mr. Fishit and there was nothing but a very nice day and calm seas.:frown:

When fish is not biting it doesn't matter if you stand on top of them and hit them in the head with your jig. All that will do is spook them and run away.

Good luck wherever you guys decide to go. Secret or not!

For those who want Mexican fishing permits, I plan to pick them up directly from the Mexican fisheries agency on Friday, August 1st, to get them at cost (tackle stores mark them up). I'll be at the Dana landing until 1:00 noon to get names of people who want them and I'll head over to pick them up. The cost are as follows:

Weekly: $25.80
Monthly: $37.00
Yearly: $48.20

For those who can't be at the Dana landing prior to 1:00 p.m. and want Mexican fishing permits, PM me the names and the city of residence as it appears on their driver's license and they can reimburse me when they arrive.

Okay?

The Big Eye tuna are currently being caught by the 1.5 day sport boats (with 80 miles of San Diego). These bad boys average in the 60 lb plus range and I've seen them caught as big as 212 lbs. With fish fest 5 around the corner, these babies can easily be within striking range by then. The Dorodo and the YFT are starting to show up more and more each day.

In addtion to the 2 members who booked a room at the Dana Inn and already have slips, the dock master has space for one additional boat in the 20/22 foot class. UncleSurf will get that space since he was the very first person who's bringing a boat to express interest in the event. If UncleSurf cannot make it, OffShoreGary will get the space.

I may be able to get 2 additional slips at the Seaforth Landing, which is accross the street from the Dana Inn. Do any of you want me to pursure these?

When you guys refer to fishing places by numbers, are they the GPS or Loran numbers or a reef number or something else?

MrFishit

That's a good question I was afraid to ask it myself. I think they refer to the offshore Bank it belongs to and that number is how many fathoms deep it is. I already have my number(s) chosen for tomorrow.

If I'm wrong it was an educated guess

Mr. Fishit is correct. They refer to shallow banks measured in fathoms. There are some with acutaul names, such as Butterfly bank, Mushroom bank, and the airplane bank. The shape of these banks resemble their names.

Just got a fresh report for today of YFT being caught very close in. They are being caught at the 9-mile bank and just outside of the Coronados in the schools of dolphins. Plenty of good sized Albacore are being caught as well at the closer in banks!

C'mon Ed, do tell us your numbers !!

Don't make me follow you:biggrin:

Actually forget the numbers and just simply follow Damon... He knows where the fish are from all his local connections' reports. Follow him rather than struggling with the numbers. That's my backup plan...

I know it's late, but here is a website to look at for numbers, use the mouse to highlight the fishing spot and it will give you gps numbers. They are also linked to local fish reports:

BTW, couldn't get a crew together for today, see you guys tonight.

To all who participated in Fish Fest 5, can you please forward pictures that you would like to include in a post on the results of this event. In addition to the fishing/boating pitcures, I'm also looking for any pictures that are related to the event and your crew members.

Send them to:

dstannard1@yahoo.com

Thanx.
