Hey guys,

Military appreciation day is June 7th and a few of us are heading to Cape Lookout the next day. I plan to camp overnight in the hook and invite anyone else on the forum to come along and enjoy a day at the beach if you can. It would be nice to put some names to faces. Quik Fix II (Jerry) is planning to meet me and I think I have his son Squid Row (Rich) talked into going.

Who else can make it Sunday June 8th?

I am interested but I have never been there before. Do you go out of the inlet and up the coast or do you stay in the sound? I have a 170 so wonder if it is big enough. Are you camping Sunday night? Do you sleep on the boat? A lot of questions but I have been wondering when we were going to have a North Carolina get together and would like to participate if I can get someone to go with me. My wife is not a camper.
Thanks,
Mattamuskeet

You and your wife could make it a day trip. Put in at Harkers Island and run straight across to the lighthouse. No need to go outside and the people at the ramp/marina will be more than helpfull in giving directions. Even faster, since you are trailering, put in at Morehead City at the ramp at the end of Taylors Creek. Your almost at H.I. and you save 1/2 hr in the truck.

Thanks for the tips Quick Fix. I will check out the area that you suggested launching from and the route on my charts. Is your plan to go to the hook on Sunday morning?

I am planing on leaving my boat in Atlantic Beach or Morehead Saturday night and being at the Cape before noon on Sunday. I'll head home from the Cape about 5 PM on Sunday. About a 2 hr boat ride. Hope you can make it. Have you ever been there before?

Never been there. I have been to Harkers Island many times but just for the carving festival. I have my wife talking about it now. She just keeps reminding me that my boat is not big. I tend to carry a lot of "stuff". If she goes, I am thinking about getting a hotel room that would have access to docks for Saturday night. Any recommendations? We would probably get down to that area on Saturday morning and explore the waters. And then be at the hook on Sunday.

What is going on for Military Appreciation Day that Brad was talking about? What else to do and see? I think that the Maritime Museum has been enlarged since I was there last. Maybe we could have dinner together on Saturday night?

The motels on Harkers Island would probably be your best bet. The Atlantic Beach/ Morehead area will be booked considering the Mad event and the Big Rock.To find out more about MAD go to their web site or click on Squid Row profile. Saturday night I'll be at the MAD lll event but we should get together at another time. Maybe later in the summer you could come down for a few days.

Quik Fix,
Thanks again for the tips. I will check out the Harkers Island hotels. I would love to come down later in the summer. There are several trips on the Inland Waterway that I want to take. Hoping to get some members to participate in some of them.

I have been looking at your posts on your new purchase. My wife feels better about MY boat projects now. Keep me posted on the get together.

Hey Mattamuskeet,

Glad to hear you're thinking about coming down. When you make your approach to the lighthouse through the sound stay in the channel marked by the bouys and go slow in case you hit a sandbar. If you have some polarized sunglasses wear them when navigating the sound. The stretch after passing harkers island to the lighthouse is the most shallow part. When you see 4ft on the depth finder it's accurate.

You'll be fine in the shammy with the full keel, just keep it slow for the first time.

Brad,
When do you think that you will arrive on Sunday? Do you camp on the beach or sleep on the boat? I am thinking about getting a room in Harkers Island for Saturday and Sunday night. It looks like a fairly short run to the hook from there. I will probably pull the charts out tonight.

I'll be out fishing Saturday with the troops for military appreciation day. We have slept on the boat and will probably do the same that weekend. Beach camping is no problem just a little more sandy. It should be less than 12 miles from Harker's Island to the hook.

See you there.

I had intentions on coming to the hook, even had the hotel reservations at Calico Jack's. And then I pulled my boat to the coast for a mini vacation this past weekend. The gas dollars were staggering. I am going to have to cancel out. I would have to pull the boat back from Swan Quarter to Greensboro and then pull to Harkers Island, pull back from Harkers Island to Greensboro and then return it to Swan Quarter. About 900 miles, I figure.

I will have to make the trip to Cape Lookout at some time in the future. I was looking forward to seeing the Cape and meeting y'all.

Thanks for the invite.

If it helps, I have plenty of fenced in storage. Always room for a cult member, or you could leave it in the water at my home.

Holy Waah- Nice to see you'll be able to make it, I can't wait to meet you in person.

Mattamuskeet- Do you have to pull the boat to Greensboro? Swan quarter would be closer to the beach than Greensboro. I would love for everyone to make it but if not there's always next year.

Good Day to all, I looked for that Billy da Kid last time he said he was camping, never seen him?

Last Sunday things did not look good for MAD, da Holy Waah did not start, tryed to jump no good, Monday I found a wire off the starter from the switch the QD was loose from putting in the new starter and came off.

Every thing is on GO, see every one Friday afternoon at the park.

I was there and have pictures to prove it! I'll try to post some on the site when I get a chance to catch my breath. Glad you got the boat issues worked out in time for MAD. I won't be down Friday afternoon but I'll be out early Saturday morning on the prowl.

The only boat with Holy in the name I saw was Holy Smoke. I'll have the VHF tuned to 68 or 69 during MAD unless someone else has a better channel to use.

Thanks for the offer Quik Fix. I really appreciate it but I guess that I better pass.

Brad, I thought about towing from Swan Quarter to Harkers Island but I would have to take more vacation days to get down there and then get to Harkers and then return the boat to Swan Quarter. It wouldn't be too bad if I lived in Swan Quarter.

Maybe next time.

I know it's a long ways to the Cape from your area. I went fishing at Mattamuskeet with a friend and I thought we would never get there. We did all that driving from Washington to find a path beside the lake that led to the ramp. All the snakes would jump into the water as we went down the canal, it was creepy!

The only thing worse is when they land in the boat with you.

I am thinking about taking some trips on the ICW. Some leaving from or ending at Swan Quarter and Kitty Hawk. Are you interested? I would feel more comfortable if I was buddy boating.

We will probably go to Ocracoke at some point this year leaving from Swan Quarter. I'll give you a heads up when we go.

Yeah, let me know when you are going. I don't know where you usually put over but the ramp on the right just before you get to the ferry has been improved greatly by the Wildlife Resources Commission. Nice floating dock dividing the ramps. Last weekend was the first time that I have used it since the improvement. None of the ramps at the Landing are as good as this one and its free.

Brad
What VHF channel will you use this weekend?

Squid Row
06-03-2008, 12:35 AM
MAD will be on Channel 71 for docking, valet ramp service and general fishing stuff.

It does not look like I'll be able to make the Cape Lookout gathering. Unfortunately, I have to be at work bright and early on Monday, so unless I can hitch a ride and be on the road by about 4 or so since I am not bringing my boat, I am going to have to get a rain check

QF call me with your boat reg numbers. They are needed for the fishing license waiver with DMF

Billy The Kid

Quik Fix- I'll be scanning 68, 69, & now 71. I'll probably use 69 more since it's not as congested.

Squid Row- Your welcome aboard my vessel for the night if you would like. Right now it's just me and the wife in the cabin and we can setup a tent in the stern of the boat for you to sleep in Saturday night. We can take you back to shore whenever you need to get back. I'd like to hangout if you can make it.
