I have come to the conclusion that the best thing that I can do is replace my current engine to ensure I dont get nickeled and dimed to death while trying to get it to run well. I have a INDMAR 250 and am looking at replacing it with a new gas engine. I have been pricing them and have found them to be a little pricey. Any suggestions on what the best replacement engine is and should I consider a rebuilt, and have you ever seen rebuilts offer the FW cooled option?...

Try www.affordablemarine.com for a new Ford 351/260hp longblock - around $2600. If you want the 285hp H.O. - try marineengines.com in Mass - goes around $3100 and their shipping is reasonable.
If you go rebuilt - try Jasper engines - maybe www.jasper.com - they build very high quality engines to YOUR specs - When the time comes I'm gonna use them for my replacement engine - the long block anyway, then to Edelbrock for a pair of low-weight Performer Aluminum heads and aluminum factory replacement manifold (Performer). Then to Marine Manifold Corp, right here on Long Island for a pair of custom built copper manifold/riser combos ($1500 - and they last forever) and I bet I can take around 300lbs right out of the boat and increase USEABLE mid-range horsepower as well. A win-win if ever there was one.

I've heard some bad things about Recon Marine rebuilds - no first hand experience - but bad enough stories for me to stay away. If you want a real nice rebuilt engine - try Sequel Marine Engines - try to find a local dealer - a friend put a 302/220hp in a Predator 20 and it performs excellent for a person that's pretty hard on his boat. We looked inside (Under the oilpan) and all seemed very professionally done - even multicolored paint marks on the mains indicating proper torque applied (I think). A nice job. And "Popularly Priced" as they say, around $1500 delivered to Long Island.
I'd still go Jasper/Edelbrock/Custom exhaust on mine though. Regards Leprechuan

Try www.skidim.com they have a great catalog and a fair homepage. They have complete engines at $3150 for the 351 direct replacement. They have short and long blocks for less of course. They have three models carb, HO carb and EFI. There are many posts on this website regarding peoples choice between the three but just suffice to say even the carb has about 285+ hp and weighs about the same as what you have now. Just think to get a new 285+ hp out board it would cost over 18k. Lee
