I have a 90 26' Mackinaw and am in the process of trying to give it the first real service that it's had since new. It runs like a dream but I think it's the rust that's holding it together. My question is...since mine is an Indmar 351 raw water cooled, will a new PCM w/fresh water cooling fit with just a transmission disconnect and reconnect and the same motor mount location or am I opening a major can of worms? It looks like I have to remove the engine just to replace the old manifolds anyway....info anyone... also,is there any real benefit to moving up to the HO model over conventional? Thanks in advance!

Your boat was available for a time with a FWC PCM 351/250hp. No problem dropping the new motor where the old RWC engine was. Even the same engine mount location on the stringers, I believe. Some plumbing needs to be attended to but nothing too intimidating. I also recommend a new transmission flex-plate when doing this swap. Real cheap insurance and believe me, you NEVER want one of these to let go in a tough locale. I had mine break 10 miles offshore on a VERY cold Jan afternoon right in the middle of the Inbound Shipping Lane to NY Harbor and only the fact that my buddy was next to me with his Pilothouse 26 saved me from a LOOOONG wait for Boat US towing. If they would even come. So for about 70 bucks, its worth changing.
As far as the H.O. 285hp version vrs the 260 hp version, the extra ponies come from a more agressive roller cam and roller tip rockers (I think) and while it does make more power, its all at the top, meaning above 3300. If you cruise at around 2800-2900, like I do to stay out of the secondaries, then you will see no benefit. Fuel consumption in the cruise range appears identical to the less powerful motor. I know all this because that Pilothouse 26 I mentioned above has the H.O. motor and side-by-side running against my standard-issue 250hp FWC PCM show exactly the same speed and fuel consumption as verified by Floscans and GPS's. I see no real need for the hotrodded motor in a 26, EXCEPT that the standard 250/260hp models are getting VERY scarce and even the H.O. longblock has gone up $600 in the last 18 months. Thanks for the info...I went to Discount Marine out of Columbia,SC and their catalogue showed a complete 351 for $5500, but when I called I was told that the base engine is sold out, and only the HO is available for $6000 plus extra for fresh water cooling plus freight. Too costly...I'm just going to pull the motor and do a complete rebuild for half that price. Thanks again

Well,
most of what is written is true. But the 351HO has the GT40 heads. It also has more torque. This comes in handy when digging out of the hole.
At this time we at Engines1 have the engines in stock. If you want to do a hassle free swap then the complete engine is the way to go. The standard version will sell for $5244.00 plus freight to you and tax. The HO version sells for $6078.00 plus the same plusses. If you really want to go nuts the 351 multi-point fuel injected 310 horsepower is $8076.00.
All are fresh water cooled and should fit the same mount location. All come with a new damper plate and the gear will bolt right to the bellhousing. If you or anyone has any questions about the Sea Maxx engine feel free to call us here at Engnines1 at 800-548-6252 or e-mail at engines1@wbdiesel.com
