1. 1988 Shamrock 26' Predator Starter Removal

Is it possible to remove and replace the starter on a Shamrock 26' Predator with a 351, fresh water cooled without removal of manifolds, heat exchnagers and the like?
Does the removal of the sink and baitwell housing make it possible?
Regards
Randy

IW - If you've got a PCM, the easiest method is to remove the RW pump and the heat exchanger. Then use a swivel socket on the single wire positive terminal coming in from alongside the motor halfway back. After that use a long extension with a straight socket forthe two mounting bolts, attacking from the front of the motor where the RW pump was. Its helpful if 1/ You partialy cut the inside edge of the drain channel on the strbd side above the starter and 2/ Have an assistant with a flashlight reach down from the side and assist you in placing the socket on the appropriate bolts. If you think removal is fun, wait till you reinstall. I do this job every 2 seasons - completely disassemble the starter and replace whatever is necessary. Usually only have to replace the brushes and give the commutator a scotchbright shine. Sometimes you might need to shim the armature to decrease endplay. Look for no more than 1/32" of endplay. If more Shim her up. Also, check the front armature carrier bearing and if you have any doubts about the bendix, ditch it too. Plus look hard at the contact points inside the removeable top housing. A light crocus cloth rub to freshen is a good idea. All these parts are readily available for very small money from any Auto electric rebuilding shop. Do this job yourself - never trust some "Factory rebuilt" on a one-engine rig. Too many people in the trade trying to shave a few cents profit, usually to the end-user's detriment. That wuld be you. This is an important PM job. Every 2 seasons, try not to push for a third year. And while you've got that RW pump out, change the impeller. And do an acid wash of BOTH sides of the heat exchanger - use MaryKate On and Off cut 50% fill one side at a time and let it sit in there 5 minutes before a thoughout rinse-out. Every 2 seasons on those jobs too. Regards, Leprechaun
