When I got my boat (used) it had a Fram HP1 racing filter on it - the guy at the boat store said I could use a PH8 instead - said the HP1 was for high RPM high pressure/volume. Engine is 91 351 260HP operated at 3,000 rpm. What do you think?

I think you are safe using almost any compatible filter. I have the same engine, 1990 vintage. I change the oil and filter every 30 hours and have never had a problem regardless of filter make. Most times I use a Fram, Purolator or STP whichever one is on sale. Last time I looked there were over 3600 hours on the dial. I think most any filter will do the job, just keep the oil fresh.

The Fram PH-8"A" is fine. I believe that is the same as Motorcraft FL-1A. As Rich said, changing it frequently is the key. I would stay away from the super cheapo filters though. I recommend name brand filters and they are really not that much more expensive. I believe there was another thread about oil changing frequency somewhere on this board. Good info there also.

The last time I changed the oil, I used a FRAM DG8A. It is a direct replacement for the PH8A with a teflon additive. Fram claims the additive clings to the metal and provides better cold-start lubrication. If true, a very helpful characteristic since the boat sits during the week without running. Everything seems good so far. I have had prior Ford blocks and have used the PH8A with no problems. Even the DG8A's are pretty cheap in the scheme of things. There aren't many boat parts you can replace for less than $10!

If you switch to something other than the HP1 filter, keep a close eye on the filter the first few times you run it. The HP1 has a higher burst strength and can handle a high volume oil pump. This may be why the previous owner switched. A standard filter might not take it. I know this because I almost killed the motor in my 5.0 mustang when a regular PH8A couldn't handle the oil pump and got all distorted, leaking oil everywhere.
