I am looking at repowering my 26 cuddy. I'm lookig at either pcm seamax 350 mpi at 325 hp or the same engine with tbi at 310 hp. My question is how much better performance will I get out of either of these over my PCM 351 @250 hp? Is the sifference in the cost ($1500) worth it for the mpi engine over the tbi engine. What speed differences can I expect with either engine and over my current set up?
Lastly, will my fuel economy be improved by either (currently get about 2 miles per gallon)
Thanks
Bob

Blue - I'm not looking to start a 40 post thread on F.I. vrs Carbs but PCM/SeaMaxx offers that engine with a carb at the same 310hp rating, so why the extra complexity and potential problems of a marine F.I. system? Seems that an investment in a host of new tools (incuding a computer scan tool) plus some schooling would be needed before I would be confident taking a F.I.-powered rig offshore. No problem in the first few years, but evidence, admittedly anecdotal, from other post boards suggests that electronic controls on ignition AND fuel might not be totally scienced out just yet. Aw, maybe its just me. Forget it. I'm probably just too conservatively cautious with my single-screw boat. Leprechaun

Just a note...I saw the message about repoweringand wanted to respond. After a lot of soulsearching, I took the plunge today and ordered a new SeaMaxx 351 from Marine engines . I have a 26' Mackinaw and went with the HO version simply due to cost. Now I bought a bobtail because I'm lazy and don't trust that anything is worth saving from the old engine, but the point is that they are out of conventional engines and only had two HO's left...so if you're thinking of repowering, the 351's seem to be getting scarce fast. Good luck!

Blue,
I have (3) 1996/7 reports from Shamrock that depict the (2) PCM carb and (1) EFI engine. No mention if it was TBI or MPI on a 220 Stalker. While the reports don't show GPH they do show speed differences. At cruise, 3000 RPM, EFI 23.1 kts, carb 1 - 23.8 kts, carb 2 - 24.8 kts. WOT EFI 4200 RPM @ 31.5 kts, Carb 1 4400 RPM @ 31.5 kts and carb 2 4350 rpm @ 31.5 knts. All three boats ran a 14x11 prop. They did send me a fourth report on a 1996 merCruiser 350 EFI, still with a 14x11 prop. 3000 @ 24.2 kts and WOT at 4600 RPM @ 33.5 knots. Now since these reports came out, horsepower has really jumped and these will be off.
On a side note, my 1991 220 Stalker cruises at 22 kts. @ 3000 RPM, burning 9.6 GPH and 30 knots at WOT.
The only major advantage that I see is cold starting, nothing beats EFI. For the money, save the dough and put it in the fuel tanks.
If you want me to send you the reports, send me an e-mail. billp@teamnoslack.com
