1. Cutlass Bearing

As anyone changed the cutlass bearing in a keel drive Shamrock? I need to change mine and have no idea how. Are there set screws or is there a special bearing press needed?
Thanks
Randy

No set scews. You need a special press. Be VERY careful because you're pulling it out of fiberglass not a metal strut. I've seen the job done twice and it clearly is not something I'd attempt alone. The fella that does that sort of work - my buddy - made up a puller/press out of a length of threaded rod and some washers. Not real certain how or what it pulls/presses against. I think maybe he puts a big ratchet socket behind the bearing, just outside the circumference of the bearing and carefully pulls the bearing out of the glass that way. Sorry I can't be more helpful but I've never done the job on a Shamrock myself. Don't play around with this one. Its not a preceedure for on-the-job-training. Anybody else THAT HAS DONE THIS JOB ON THEIR SHAMMIE want to take a wack at an answer? Leprechaun

I had mine replaced by a mechanic a few years back. It required some special tools and was still a fair amount of work.

O.K. - Here's the rest of the story. Screaming Eagle (AKA Sea Ya!) is my dock mate up here in beautiful freezing Seaford, Long Island, New York. If you've been following my posts you know that I make frequent reference "My Shamrock Guru". . . that's Freddie! He's the finest marine mechanic I've EVER met and I've met a few, being an ex-Snap-on Tools dealer. In fact Freddie was also a Snap-on dealer (25yr man) and was my mentor in the biz and in all things mechanical relating to boats. Especially in things Shamrock. He's got two, a 20 and 26, both Pilothouses. Plus a Whaler 13, OMC jet-boat 15, and a SeaRay 31, all Sharp boats, just not as sharp as mine. (Good thing Freddie doesn't like computers!) Many of the answers I give here on the board are bounced off Fred first, for verification, then posted. See, with the Lep you get 2 for the price of one. Alright, 2 and a half, if you count the Screamer. Anyway Freddie rigged my boat and Screaming Eagle's 20 along with about a dozen other Shamrocks in the last few years. The guy knows his stuff and being retired and independantly "Well Off" takes jobs on as he sees fit. A real craftsman and worth tracking down if you need the help. Even if you don't live local. My Uncle, recently past, towed his new Shamrock 20 ALL THE WAY from Sarasota, Fla to Seaford and back so that Fred and Fred alone could fish-rig it. Too bad the guy didn't live long enough to even put the boat in the water back in Fla. Fast-moving cancer did him in last year. The point is that Uncle knew the value of having someone intimately familiar with the intricacies and specifics of these boats do the work. So, that's Fred. When do want to trail your boat to Long Island? ;-} Leprechaun

P.S. - Screamer - when you gonna WASH THAT BOAT? ;-}}}} Lep
