CHAS,
Good rule of thumb, once a year for an impeller. Simple to do and you'll have that all important piece of mind. Not familiar with the dripless, still have the flax packing.

Have a 2001 220 Open with a dripless stuff box. It started spraying water all over the engine box after two months!
At $200-$300 dealer added cost it was definately not worth it. I used to have a 219 Open and I loved the standard stuff box. What I like most about Shamrocks:tried and true, simplistic, yet, durable and functional features.
I would suggest standard stuff box if you : want to save money, do not want to worry about breakage, and do not feel like repairing something that does not reliably do what it is supposed to do.
KEEP IT SIMPLE AND RELIABLE!!!

As an interesting note, the BOATING magazine review of Shamrocks refers to the conventional stuffing box on the boats as a great choice because it is self lubricating and the one drip per minute while underway is far more desirable than bearing replacement. Lee
