How do I change the transmission oil? I cannot seem to locate a drain plug.

I am curious, too. I haven't had to do mine yet. I had dealer to post break-in check-up. Advise would be appreciated here also.

I used an manual oil change pump to pump mine out through the dipstick hole then refilled with Dexron III.

The drain plug location depends on your gear. If you have a PCM gear the drain is on the bottom at the front of the gear. If you have a Velvet Drive you should remove the lower oil hose to drain. If you have a ZF-Hurth gear you will have to suck the oil out through the fill or filter areas. I can send a fax of the breakdown if ya'll like.

Got to slightly modify the above advice as I do not want the potential mess in the bilge that would occur if I open the bottom retun line to my BW 71C box. I use the same power oil changer I use for engine oil changes and pull the old fluid out thru the trans dipstick hole. Get the full 3.5 quarts out so I know the method works and after a minor teardown this past year found zero debris in the fluid screen, so I think this might be the best/least problematic solution. I do mine yearly - 3.5qts of Dexron-III in my installation. Leprechaun

Engineman or Lep,
Is there any magnatized plug or screens that would need to be inspected if the dipstick method were used? The bottom drain method sounds tough. Do you need to warm the tranny before using that method? Lee

Yes Lee a BW71C has a course screen filter behind the inlet (Return) hose fitting down low. - No magnetized plug, good idea though - Cleaning the filter is not a normal maintenance item, only because the screen itself is so coarse that only the grossest schmutz particles or pieces of metal would be caught and retained there. By the time you find those pieces, the box is junk, I believe. Probably it would be slipping or making some God-awful noise to alert you to a problem by then. We just did a minor teardown of my box last winter and found zero crud on the filter after 13-years and 850 hours of operation. None to kind I might add. The Lep get run hard - but the maintenance is the key. Do the oil change after a long run and she'll run up the suction hose like water. It's really a snap - if it takes 20 minutes, you're goofing off. Rgds, Leprechaun

Hello,
Engineman and Lep are totally correct. I couldn't find a plug on mine (Hurth) and found it was on the bottom. Would had to pulled it or bored a hole in the hull. Needless to say, I did neither, rather used the warmfluid/suction technique referenced and feel pretty sure I got nearly all. If only all servicing was this easy.....

Tim,
I would appreciate a fax of info. I have the Hurth in a 2000 246 W/A. My fax number is 804-520-9237. Thanks a bunch.
