1. Exhaust Pipes

Hello, On a late model 24'6" Shamrock, I saw on the thru hull exhaust two 90' rubber elbows about 3" around mounted down towards the water below the swim platform. They directed the exhaust down towards the water. Since I don't have a swim platform nor mufflers,I was thinking they might help reduce the exhuast noise. Where can they be found and do they work well and not cause alot of back pressure? When you call a shamrock dealer, they have to have the hull ID number to look up or order anything so I out of luck since my 1988 26' Shamrock never came with these things.

Randy

Randy - Those exhaust mufflers you saw are made of hard rubber by a company called "Sudbury", I think. Available from all the big Marine supply cataloug guys. They are real pricey. Better to put that money toward a factory swim plateform that will direct the exhaust niose down and away from the cockpit. I have straight 3" copper pipes in my bilge, without any mufflers and with the swim platform we can hold normal conversations at cruise speed at the helm. Also, I strongly recommend sound insulating your engine box with the foam/lead sheeting available from West Marine or Boat U.S... Regards, Leprechaun

Leprechaun, do you recall which stores carry these exhaust elbows? I need one for my 246 and can't seem to find a source other than my dealer. I checked Boat/US and Boaters World but didn't see them in the catalogs or on the shelf.
thanks for any help

Griglygrak - Yep, you can get 'em from Defender Marine - www.DefenderUS.com....They are on page 187 of their current cataloug. Made by Salisbury, they are called Neoprene Hyro-Vac Silencers and the appropriate size for up to 325hp gas engines cost $249.95 each. Man, that's alot of money for rubber mufflers. I can live without them. But if you like 'em - there ya go. Regards, Leprechaun

Randy, I have a 1988 26' Shamrock hardtop with swim platform. I have the standard PCM Ford engine. I
have 3"(approx)exaust hoses leading into mufflers on each side. These exhaust at the stern. I am under the impression that this was standard. Has someone removed your mufflers maybe?

Leprechaun,
Thanks for the reply. However I don't think we are talking about the same parts. I looked up the unit which you refer to and while similiar it's not exactly what I'm looking for. The Hydro-Vac Silencer is a multi chambered muffler type elbow and the piece that I'm looking for is simply a hollow 90deg elbow. It's helps to reduce exhaust noise however, it's main purpose is to stop water from entering the exhaust pipe while slowing or backing down. It's the simplest of parts but I haven't been able to find a source other than my dealer. I may just go with a typical exhaust flap.

Thanks again.

They came on my 1999 246wac they are very simple 90% piece of rubber they should not cost much but being for a boat they probably do. I have had no problems with mine but I believe Gavin lost 1 or 2 before they figured out how to keep them on with screws. Have you called Shamrock for a price?

Capt Bob is right on- they are just 90 degree elbows. They came new on my 246 WA (with swim platform), although they "disappeared" on my maiden voyage. Turns out they were attached by hose clamps only. SBU replaced them for me under warranty and I installed them with 3 stainless screws each and the clamps and 300 hrs later, they are still there. While I was waiting for the replacements, I temporarily installed flaps. The flaps were noisier than the elbows, both underway and at idle. They divert the exhaust underwater so you are using the water as a muffler. Check with SBU or your dealer and they can get them for you, I'd guess about $20.00-30.00 each. You might want to check to see if your engine needs any particular backpressure, which your dealer or factory rep could find out. Good luck!

John, I found them online at West Marine, in both 90's and 45's. I chose the 45, on my 26' the 90's would have been too deep in the water. They work great! Very quite; at idle they are underwater, on plane they are about a 1/2" above the water and the passing water acts as a venturie and helps draw the exhaust water out.
