1. 1993PCM 351 FWC Locked Up
Bad news! After running a compression test and tune up, my engine on my 26' Shamrock locked up. It was running great for about 30 minutes, 160 temp 45 oil pressure, at 2800 RPM's it sounded like it was running out of fuel and then wouldn't stay running, after about 5 tries, the engine wouldn't turn. Pulled plugs and they had saltwater on them and still the engine wouldn't move a bit. What happened to it is a mystery to me. I'm going to go back in with a 5.8 MPI bobtail with a new Borg Warner tranny. Oh well I guess worst things could have happened.
Regards
Randy

IW,
Sorry to hear about your engine. Is this the same one you posted on the board about the compression check? you are right, you could have been 60 miles offshore when it happened. Glad that didn't happen to ya.

P.S. - Where the 7734 did the saltwater come from inside your FWC engine?

Randy - if you got SW in your cylinders, 99% probability your manifolds and/or risers are holed. This is the single biggest killer of Marine engines. Sorry to hear about your issues, but again, why are you spending all that moolla on a complete new drivetrain? Why not just buy a new Long-block and switch over you add-ons? And most especially, why spring for a new Box? Those things are basically bullet proof. Rgds, Leprechaun

Hey Pete, Ain't this a bitch? but anyway, My add-ons are 12 yrs old and I don't want to have to worry with them. You see I'm 400 miles from the boat, so when I go down, I don't want any problems. The tranny runs out well, but it doesn't sit to well to bolt a new engine to an old tranny. Money's not my problem (Thank God) I just want not to have to worry in the back of my mind anymore when I go out. I've been towed in three times in 2 months and I'm tired of it.
Even though this bit of bad luck happened to me, I still feel the still working items are sound but may not be 3 years down the road.
Pete, I had water in both sides of the engine, no way both risers could fail at the same time, so maybe one was leaking for a while. What do you think?

Its pretty unusual for both to go at the same time plus you were running at 2800 you say. One would think that exhaust pressure alone would push any water out the manifolds and in fact the exhaust fumes should reverse out the cooling system pin holes if they exist. I read once that exhaust coming out the ports is moving at supersonic speeds so stands to reason it would keep the water out of the cylinders while underway, even though its being pumped at some pressure by the RW pump. Wierd. But that's boating. If you can go for an entirely new drivetrain without your wife killing you, go for it man! But I've got to tell you that you are being super-cautious replacing the trans - those things just don't fail all that often, with even the most basic of maintenance. But then new is new, ya know?
