I was just reading information on synthetic oils (Amsoil website) and they reccomend a by-pass filter. They describe the system as being perfect for boats and other hard to gravity drain engines. They claim that a complete oil change is unneccesary when properly installed, especially with synthetic. They claim you simply unscrew the filters (2, 1 full flow and 1 filter for 2 micron filtration) and then top off oil in engine. This sounds like a dream. They said that the filter is equal to the same filtration that oil recyclers use.
I do not like to think of myself as lazy, but I know synthetic is better and they claim its equivilant to changing your oil every ten minutes at cruising RPMs. If anyone has had any experience with oil by-pass filters please reply, even if it was not on a marine application. Also if anyone is or has used synthetic oil in their Indmars. Thanks, Lee

I would like to hear more on the use on synthetic oil. Changing out the filter is not an easy reach.

I just swtiched out to synthetic oil, CASTRO 10w30 in my INDMAR 350. About $4 quart. 200 hours on the engine. My question is the filter, I have a fram PH30 which seems small. Can I upgrade to an other bigger?better filter??

The question is not whether a larger filter would be better, the question is would a smaller (particulate size) filter be better. It is really the by-pass issue I would like to know if anyone is using. I have seen it used on diesels quite extensively. I was hoping that someone might have experience with by-pass filters for gas engines. Help, if you can.
