1. Oil change
Just bought a 1983 sham 20 cuddy with a 302 2 barrel. I tried to change the oil filter and found that there was not enough room to pull the filter off. Do I have to raise the engine to change the filter? And is there a long center pickup in the center of the oil filter?
Have been reading this site for weeks and it's great!! Keep up the good work, it is the only place where I can get honest info on the shammies.

I have a 20 Pilot House 1984 with the same engine and the filter is tight but it does come off.

OA - when you finish unscrewing the filter, tilt the back end straight down and pull it straight up alongside the engine. If that's not posible (Its how I do it on my larger 26), then put a pan under the filter to catch the runn-off oil, turn it sideways with the open end facing forward and pull it out from the front of the engine, maneuvering it around the dipstick tube. I HAVE A 1982 PILOT HOUSE THAT I JUST REPOWERED WITH A 350 MERCRUISER. I HAD THE 302 IN IT BEFORE THE SWAP AND NEVER HAD ANY TROUBLE GETTING THE FILTER OFF. WITH THE PILOT HOUSE IT IS ALO TOUGHER TO WORK ON BECAUWSE YOU DON'T HAVE ALOT OF ROOM. THE BIGGEST PAIN IN THE NECK FOR ME WAS CHANGING THE STARTER. i ALSO WAS NEVER ABLE TO GET ALL THE OIL OUT OF THE ENGINE THRU THE DIPSTICK. I TRIED A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT PUMPS. NOTHING SUCKED MORE THAN A COUPLE OF QUARTS. I USED TO DRAIN THE OIL INTO A LOW PAN AND PUMP IT OUT OF THE PAN. AT TIMES IT GOT REAL MESSY. YOU SOON WILL LEARN ALL THE LITTLE TRICKS OF THE SHAMROCK TRADE1 GREAT BOATS . BEST OF LUCK
