On Boattraderonline.com there are three Volvo 40TAMD ( i believe that model info is right0 for sale with transmissions fro $7000 each. I know it would require more effort than direct replacement, but before I go through any repower I am going to look hard at diesel. The Volvo will fit and it is the right hp at about 175~190. This represents about 50% savings from what I have seen before. As information, but I would like to know if anyone has tried the Volvo engine in the Shammy. Lee

Lee- better CAREFULLY measure the engine dimensions - My buddy's got a TMAD41 (Later version) and it most definitely WILL NOT fit under a Shamrock 26 engine box. WAY too long and deep. Also - those 40s were trouble prone - they used a glow-plug to fire her off instead of the direct injection that the 41's had. Be extra cautious here - Mike (my buddy) just had to have the injectors and Fuel distribution pump rebuilt on his 41 at 1400 hrs and $2500 later the boat ran much worse that before the job. Lost the better part of a season trying to science out what the hell was wrong. Also - look real hard at the transmission - those 40s used a Volvo box that was actually the upper part of their Model 290 outdrive - needless to say NONE of them survived and ALL had to be upgraded to a newer design. The models that were bad were called "HSL", I think, and the newer, better versions were called "MSL", again not real sure. But I AM sure that you might be bittin' off a big one here. Try posting this request on www.boatdiesel.com in the Volvo section and see what feedback you get. I DO know that the Cummins 210hp and the Yanmar 170/190/230hp (Both engines are 4-cyl) fit in a Shamrock 26. And both can use a BW 72C box - bigger than the one currently in your rig, but it will fit. Also plan on a new sized Drive Shaft, stuffing box, prop, and cutlass bearing. That's a grand right there. Just doesn't seem to make much sense as a swap, but to each his own, especially if you love boats that smell like buses. Rgds, Leprechaun

I repowered an 84 Preditor with a bait/tackle station and installed a 210 Cummins with no problem. I installed a BW 71C 1:1 and my only regret is that I didn't select another trans. While it fits in OK - (and performs great)the BW was a mistake. The bell housing of the engine is approximately 1/4" from the bottom ot the bilge and the engine is slanted quite a bit. I also have to change wheels during the season if I want to slow down enough to troll for Striped Bass in NJ - since the BW doesn't have a trolling valve. I'm trying to install a ZF 220 PL with a trolling valve - which is a stronger gear and will level the engine out significantly.
