Thanks for the comment. I should have listed the trans seperate and not part of the oil line.
Do at least check the gear oil and top off. If it has been a couple of 3 years replace it. Also change the trans oil filter if it is equipped.
Check the cooler lines for chafing, wear or buldging.

Engineman,
Can you remove the oil filter without oil from the crank case draining from the opening. Another way to say it, is the crank case level higher than the oil filter. My boat is wet slipped and to drain my oil with gravity takes forever, so I use a drill pump. Have you ever used any crank case cleaners that advertises it removes old oil before refilling with the new oil. I also have a posting on the website about amsoil's synthetic oil and by-pass oil filtration. Do you have any experience with either of these in gasoline inboards.

Capt.,
Before draining the old oil run the engine upi to temperature, it should be quicker. The oil filter should be higher than the oil level as the filter is above the top of the pan. Cleaners are a mystery to me. I have used them on cars but not boats. Marine engines are generally not subject to the dirt in the air as cars so I am not sure if there is any benefit above a good grade oil but probably will not hurt and is a cheap flush. And to date the jury is still out on synthetic oil. The other thimg I need to do is study up on the alleged benefits of oil bypass. I have never heard of oil bypassing any filter as being a good thing. I will research and be back.

E-Man,
Thanks for the info. There are many times I would like to change the filter and not the oil. The oil by-pass I was refering to is a bit misleading. If you go to www.amsoil.com they have a diagram. It is the same type of by-pass that big diesels use. The patented part of their solution is they have an adapter that screws onto the oil filter threads. Take a look and give me your opinion.
