I'm a new memeber as of today and see there are several threads on exhaust pipes. I sprung a leak last summer and could not believe their condition when I pulled them out. Talk about a disaster waiting to happen! Word to the wise: Get them out of there! I see the preference here seems to be copper as a replacement. I was thinking of stainless. Any thoughts on stainless versus copper?

tremolo - SS should be O.K. - depends on the alloy #. I'm not versed enough in the nuances of SS metallography to tell you which would be best. If you are interested there is an informative article in this month's National Fisherman (Might also be available on-line at www.nationalfisherman.com) describing various alloys of Stainless and Bronze giving tensile strengths and relative corrosion resistance.
Personally, I think that Copper is the way to go - "M" Guage is available at any quality plumbing supply wharehouse and has held up splendidly on my buddy's boat since 1979. That includes not only replacement exhaust pipes, but a custom set of copper manifolds/risers too. If I told you the hours on those exhausts, you wouldn't believe me. Let's just say that exhaust has more hours on it than all the boats I've ever owned since 1968 combined including hours previous owners put on them.

I just looked at the copper pipes in my rig this past weekend. In there 5 complete seasons now and no significant degradation.

For the money, its just not possible to beat copper for this application.

Just stay away from Home Depot cheeep-ass thin-walled stuff. Specify "M"-gauge only.
