I have a RWC engine and have a hose fitting attached so I can run fresh water thru the engine after using the boat. I left the fresh water valve open, by mistake, and started my motor. After about 8 minutes of running I noticed the engine temp was about 205 degrees. I went back to look at the water intake and immidately found the mistake and closed the valve. Engine temp came right down. The engine seems to be fine ( i ran it for about 8 hours) but do you think it did serious harm to my engine?

I wouldn't worry too much about the engine itself, that kind of heat shouldn't cause any damage to a cast iron block with cast iron heads. What I may be concerned about is the raw water pump impellar. If the engine ran without enough flow, the impellar may have suffered from running without sufficient lubrication/cooling.

Bernie,
I think that you probably have a problem with your impellar. I also have RWC, and when I flush my engine, I never close the seacock (the valve that shuts off raw water flow to the cooling system).
The impeallar should provide enough suction that almost none of the water will go out of the seacock. I suggest that you change the impellar (and always keep a spare on the boat - cheap insurance).
Good Luck.

Bernie - No need to worry about the engine. A lot of car/truck engines have 195 degree thermostats in them. However, I agree with the others, you either did have an impeller problem or definitely have one now. I would go ahead and replace and maybe keep the existing as a spare for emergency use. Good luck.

Thanks for all the info and I will change out the impeller before I take her out again. Tuna season is just around the corner out here on the west coast and plan on getting underway as much as possible over the next 5 months.
