1. Oil pan drain hose?

I was changing the zinc in the FWC system today and discovered what I thought was a loose hose hanging between the FWC heat exchanger and the valve cover on the starboard side. The hose is about 1/4" and has a brass looking fitting on the end with a brass plug in it. It is hanging from a bracket below the distributor and runs over the motor, down the port side of the motor, and then under the oil pan. I took the plug out but nothing in the hose. It doesn't smell like oil or coolant. I put the hose down in the bilge but nothing came out. Is it possible that it is an oil pan drain? If so would there be a shut-off valve underneath? Boat is a 1997 246WA with a 5.7HO PCM engine.

Tom - Not sure what you got there. My oil drain hose is more like 3/8" diameter and when you take the cap off there is no mistaken it for anything other then the oil drain line. However, there is probably some differences between your '97 and my '00. Check a little more, I'll bet you figure it out. Good luck.

Mike, It could easily be a 3/8" hose. Since I have not started the motor yet this season, could the oil have drained back into the oil pan? When I laid the hose in the bilge I am not sure the entire length was below the oil in the pan so it might not have started to drain. How do you use this to change the oil?

That is exactly what it is. It is an oil drain hose. It has a brass hydraulic type fitting. If you are using the reccomended 30 SAE heavy duty oil, then the oil will not run out unless heated to full operating temperature, an even then it requires an oil drill pump. The design is for people with trailers to use the hose to fit down through the drain in the center of the boat.
I do mine with the drill pump and it works beautifully, less than five minutes to change the oil, no kidding. The drill pump cost $14 at West Marine.

Sounds like it is the oil drain hose then. I agree with Lee, you will need a drill pump to drain the "hot" oil. The brass end on my hose has an eyelet on it to allow you to hook it somewhwere on the engine to avoid losing it. May want to do that.

It is an oil drain hose. If nothing came out when lowered below pan level get the engine hot and try again. If still nothing blow back through the hose to remove any debris. This hose can be used as a gravity drain or hooked directly to a pump.
