1. FWC Chevy 350 Overheating & TICKING ME OFF!
I won't tell you that my engine overheated pretty much all weekend in Hatteras, but it did. I thought it was the thermostat, but after inspecting it, it was not stuck. I couldn't find anybody in Hatteras willing to boil any hot water, but let me tell ya MY blood was boiling about 24 1/2 miles offshore! Here's the dealio... Cheby 350 with FWC. NOT losing anti-freeze thru the spill over on the canister. Cap seems to be in working order, thermo too. Impellar does not have any visible signs of wear, and is in good shape. Engine has 128 hrs on her. Why am I loosing my antifreeze, and where the hell is it going? Okay, logically it should have to be leaking out of the exhaust manifold right? I have no milky oil, engine temp is fine, only at speeds above @ 2000rpm's. Anything slower in rev's and she overheats, and this is only because I have lost the fluid in my FWC. If I fill the canister with fresh water & anti-freeze she of course will not overheat at slow speeds... but not for long, as I found out AFTER running out to the Rock pile (23 miles) and getting the first knockdown only to have the alarm go off, I was forced to shut her down, and THEN I LOST THE FISH!! PISSED! So what the heck is causing this, and WHERE IS MY FLUID GOING? No other choice but to be leaving thru the heat exchanger right? What is inside the heat exchanger that would allow the passage of fluid from the FWC system into the exhaust? A blown head gasket? Can't be.. she runs like a champ, and there is no foreign substance in the oil. I spoke with our friend Tim, and he is sending me a pressure gauge to measure the FWC system with. He also said to replace the impellar just on suspicion, and quite possibly the cap. I can't work on her as she is at the curtain shop in Manteo until next week getting some MUCH needed curtains, but let me tell ya I am ready to tackle this problem, and when I can go get her, I want to be armed with the info I need to get this fixed ASAP! Suggestions other than what I have described? Man, you talk about P/O'd! Here I am having to shut my engine down as I am listening to my Penn reel literally ripping off line like I have never heard before, AND in 4-7ft swells with bait jumping all over the place! HOLY SH&* was I almost in tears! And then we lost the fish. Typical for my weekend let me tell ya. It was just plain one U G L Y weekend in Hatteras. But we still had a good time! Thanks for any and all thoughts! I DID have a... Screamin' Drag baby! Gavin

Gavin - I'll bet money you have a heat exchanger problem. You can try using the automotive cooling sysytem pressure tester if you want, but I think the results will be inconclusively "positive" meaning that the thermostat may have to be fully open to truely find out if the entire FW side is tight. I think if you pull your Heat Exchanger and bench pressure test it, you will find a pinhole. That, I believe is where your coolant is going. Right out to the relatively unpressurized SW side. Its where I'd start, even though you shouldn't yet have enough hours on her to warrant H/E problems.
The other issue that comes to mind is a bad head gasket tween the cylinders - sometimes these leak INTO the cylinders, instead of exhaust gas coming into the coolant, the coolant goes into the combustion chamber, not a lot, just a little at a time and because she's making steam anyway, you never see the slight additional white smoke.
My money's on the H/E - keep us posted. Regards,

I agree with Lep regarding the heat exchanger. For your information, I once had a Nissan Stanza with 80K miles that began loosing anti-freeze. Eventually found it was going into the cylinders via the head gasket. It was going out the exhaust pipe. It started ever so slowly, but as time went by, it got worse. Eventually, new head gasket cured the problem.

Well, I finally swapped out the suspected impeller. No change. I just ran her at idle with the garden hose attached. After about 5 minutes, she is exceeding 200 and the alarm goes off. I have only inspected the thermostat, but do plan to replace it, but can somebody tell me how to check the heat exchanger please. I am pretty frustrated at this point. 130 hours on her and I am having to do this? C'mon man... this is ticking me off something fierce! Thanks all. Gavin

Gavin - I reread this thread and still think you have a H/E problem. To bech test it you will need to get ahold of a good quality radiator pressure tester like a Snap-on or Stant (Actually, the same) and make up an adapter to go from the radiator cap adapter to either the SW or FW side of the H/E. Try getting a scrap radiator neck from your friendly local radiator repair shop, they've usually got 'em laying around in piles. Then use a piece of rubber hose and a pair of hose clamps to fasten the entire contraption to one of the H/E in/out necks. Make up a plug of some sort to stop up the other side. Now pressurize the H/E to around 20lbs. You know, PUMP IT UP BABY. Observe the pressure and leave it alone for 15 minutes. After that, any drop in pressure will tell the story, obviously. Hey man, that anti-freeze has to be going somewhere and the H/E is the logical first place to look. Very unusual for the exchanger to fail with only 130 hours on it though.
If the H/E passes the test, better get your dealer involved, because, and I even hate to say it, I think the next place to look is either the head gasket or a cracked head itself. These Chevys, robust performers that they are, are just not of the same quality as the bad boys that powered the Camaros and pick-up trucks of our past. Most blocks and heads now have "Henche en Mexico" cast on them and to say that the castings themselves are thin and frequently "Core-shifted" is an understatement. Most rebuilders that I know will not even touch a Mexican GM head. Vortec my ass. This is why I usually avise people repowering Shamrocks to go with a rebuilt Ford over a new Chevy.
Look, I hate to hang crepe when a friend's hard earned bucks and super-valuable free time are on the line, so test the exchanger first and let us know how that turns up.

Gavin - Man that sounds like a lot of work to test that thing. I would try filling the FW side with pure water with a couple of bottles of food coloring. Then place white five gallon buckets under your exhaust to see if "colored" water comes out. I guess this will not pinpoint the problem, but at least will let you know if the FW is going out the exhaust.
I do not think it is a head or head gasket because she is not missing and there was no water in the oil. Did you drain the heat exchanger for winterization? That thing may have froze/iced up and broke/split something inside the HE. Good luck.

Mike/P.E.'s method might show a gross problem but I think to do it right you've got to pressurize the exchanger. A real PITA, but necessary. Both pressure and heat can do strange things to expansion/contraction rates and what might not leak under static/cool conditions with the boat sitting pretty on the trailer might very well do it under pressure. Unfortunately I think you should pull it and bench test it. Gavin if you don't want to go through the adapter fabrication yourself, bring the exchanger to a radiator shop. They have rubber cone type adapters that they just jam into the ports, then they pressurize with the shop's compressed air for the test. It works. Rgds, Leprechaun

I ran the engine y-day at idle for 15 min + without the cap on the FWC fill chamber. It did not overheat. I really thought I had this under control as I did see a large bubble or two come out once I ran her with the top off the chamber. I wanted to doublecheck my work today. I dumped almost a whole tube of blue dye in the chamber today and placed 2, 1 gal clear plastic ice cream containers under the exhaust. It didn't take long before the clear containers were blue. I called Tim/ENGNMAN and he said to pull the cover off the front of the H/E. If it's blue water there, Lep was on the money. I am headed back over to the storage facility tonight to pull the cover off. I will post later with the results. Looks like PCM will be hearing an earful from both me & Tim! Sea ya! Gavin

Not too many people would stick their necks out for ya and help ya these days. Tim is one that will. Even Lep offered up HIS home phone to discuss this issue with him. We have 2 quality exchanger shops here on L.I., includung LENCO, whom I'm sure you've heard of. At 130 hrs, that exchanger has plenty of life in her, I think.
