Last weekend John and I took the Shammie down to the kelp beds just north of Oceanside. We had the usual slow pick on Calico Bass and Barracuda going. Then John got picked up by something big. It pulled on his thirty pound set up like a tractor, slow and straight. John's reel was getting low on line, so I offered to pull the anchor and follow the fish. Here's a few pics of Johnny D. pulling back,

We thought it was going to be a bat ray, but we were surprised to find a large Black Sea Bass on the end of the line. These pics don't do the fish justice, he was easily 90 pounds.

The Black Sea Bass was revived and took off or the bottom with an amazing kicking of his tail that got John and I quite wet.

After that we decided to troll back to the harbor. I tried to take a nap on the bow and let John drive. I said I wanted to be awakened by a screaming reel. John only let me sleep for few minutes when he got my new Tiagra reel to scream. Here's a pic of me pulling on a Thresher Shark.

The thresher went about 80 pounds.

All in all it was a good day on the water with a few fish caught.

Very nice black. I haven't caught one in US waters so you're one up on me. They sure seem to be coming back, who knows someday you may be able to keep one to eat. Contrats!

Hey Bombero, they are amazing fish. I saw the boat next to us at the kelp bed catch a much smaller one right before we caght that one. Also I have been hearing about quite a few caught near Dana Point as well. So, maybe they are bouncing back.

Forgot to ask................have you been getting into the halibut bite up there? I understand there have been lots of 20+lb fish caught the last few days.

The halibut have been elusive for me to say the least. But quite a few have been taken this year by float tubers and kayak fisherman working the shallow water.

Have you heard about all the great white activity lately? It's getting scary. A life guard at Doheny state beach watched a seal get eaten in shallow water, some divers at the Farnsworth bank saw another seal get bitten in half by a huge great white. Maybe it's time to do away with the piniped protection laws. I don't know how much spearfishing I'll be doing this year!
