The wind finally abated so it was tuna time!

Jacob (my son) and I didn't feel like dragging the boat to Monterey or running to the southern numbers so we decided find our own fish farther north. The water had warmed at the weather bouy but was the ugliest color I have ever seen there. Nothing happening so we continued southwest to around 40/38 but the water got colder and no cleaner. We heard a report of one hookup at 40/30 so we headed that way. Still bad.

Time to head south for 19/11 but at 36/30 we finally ran into clear water and a 2 degree temp break. We put the lines out and hooked up right away. We called in Rick on an 18ft cc who had just decided to give up and by the he arrived we were putting the last of a triple in the box.

Rick and his crew had never caught albies before so of course he immediately hung a triple and managed to boat two. Over the next hour Jake and I put in 7 and Rick boated 5 and lost 4. All but 2 fish were peanuts but it was great day. As we pulled in our lines Rick ran over and handed us a couple of beers. Another X halibut fisherman 8^)

We always have tuna near Monterey from June till at least October. They are typically 25 to 35 miles from Santa Cruz in the west and Monterey in the east. However, last week albies were caught 8 miles from Santa Cruz in the Soquel Hole which is normally salmon water.

I was out about 23 miles fishing most of the night for swordfish (no luck) last Friday night. At dawn we put out the outriggers and trolled up 9 tuna before heading in. Some boats that fished long on the outside caught 20 to 40 fish. The party boats were over a hundred.

You're always welcome Vegashammie but the NW wind has returned and we probably won't be able to get out this weekend. BTW, The Jammy Fecker is 22' but there were plenty of ski boats on the tuna last week.
