Went out last Sat for 6 hrs on a friends Wellcraft to tempt the Ichthy Gods. Found bright calm waters off Vancouver and only three other boats. 4 prawn traps and two crab traps and two of us trolling with 3 rods at 150 feet, provided 2 spring salmon, a bucket of prawns and 6 crabs, only two of which were legal.

Despite seals following us around most of the day, we did quite well. No bait, all spoons. These winter springs will go from legal size which is 26" and over, to about 12 lbs. Are they yummy...

I cant wait untill Salmon Season opens down here. We get Kings and the Silvers which have to be released. Limit is two fish. I will be heading up to Moro Bay for the opener April 1st. I am curious about the species of Salmon you get up there and the method used to get those prawns. Sounds like you are eating gormet up there. Wow - wild Salmon, Crabs and Prawns. :D

JC;

we get springs (which the USA calls Kings) we get coho, pinks, chum and sockeye. We also call springs Chinooks, same fish. The best eating IMO are the sockeye and the springs.

Prawning up here, is to lower a netted trap to depths of up to 400 feet recreationally, baiting them with fish parts or commercial bait similar to dry dog food kibble. Usually left overnight, and unless you have popeye's arms you use a specialized electric trap hauler to bring them up. You are allowed 4 traps per rec. license. Large prawns go about 6" in length. Very tasty!
