The NY fluke season opened today and I made my way out through the soup to Asharoken beach out in the sound about 6 am...Thank goodness for the gps....The crazy regulations they have for NY waters this year is three fish, minimum 17 in....Limited out in about 1 hr. then culled till I had three 4 lb fish(culling is not allowed but at my advanced age I must have forgotten :D ) Total catch was about 10 fish in 2 1/2 hr. I picked them on an imitation one ounce mantis shrimp in the rootbeer color made by a company down in Florida called DOA. Please don't let me read about this on the Noreast site you L.I. boys ...OK....The mack ran great as usual. Fresh flukies on the bar-b que tonight.

Holty:
My buddy fished off Montauk in a 24 Rampage Saturday and limited out in no time and that included a 9 pounder!!!!
Fog was wicked.

Congrats Holty - great way to open the season. We tried to find Mr. Pajamas off Hempstead and Mamaroneck on Sat. - no luck. The fog was so thick that it took an hour to get across the sound (figures the rader quit working a week ago), quiet as anything though at 5:30 AM. Was no one else out there? (not likely) Or just no one else sounding their horn. (more likely).

I picked up some of those shrimp to try this year, in the clear color, after I found a mantis shrimp in a bass I caught last summer. Have to see how it works. Did you rig them above a bucktail or bullet on a teaser or right on the bottom?

Would I give away secrets from one of the few people to ever give me, a newbie, some "local tips"? Not on my life!!! Besides, I've got to learn the ropes in my neck of the sound! I know there's fish here, just got to figure out where, when and how to find 'em. Havin fun trying though.

Hey Hutch..how you doing? Fished the shrimp rig a few ways....1) on a 3 ft. leader tied to a 1 ounce drail..2) on a three way rig Plum Gut style in the deeper water...3) 3 ft. leader with no added lead in shallow water on a slow drift...These things are going to be fantastic for the fall bass run..Have fun...Maybe I will catch up to you one day out there. If you want to make a run into Cold Spring harbor or bouy 15 at Lloyd point it may be worth your while..The chunk head boys are really doing a number on the fish right know. I don't care for chunking myself, but can't dispute its effectivness...Good luck..

fished outside of shinnecock this morning and the fluke bite was the best i have seen. Caught a 8 1/2 lb. fukle on the first drift. Could have limited out for about 10 people by myself. Coast Guard was checking coolers on the way in. Its all about the money(fines) not the fish.
